can anyone tell me what the normal chimney temp would be on a normal oprating blazeking wood stove with a cat? thanks DAN

S&W, North, Hiram(if you're operating it YET), anyone else? (Sorry if I left anyone out-) I'm curious too, mines not in yet. :shut:

hi beetle-kill I just have a sneakin thought that the cat is dieingor dead last winter it was smoking like cazy at normal operation
its a older blaze king KEJ 1101

If your seeing lots of smoke out the chimney chances are the cat is shot or needs cleaning. Not sure on Blaze King but also check your bypass, it could be leaking or warped?

I've cleaned the cat when I was using the stove and still the same on change. I replaced the rope seal on the by pass door at the same point but no change. I think the cat probley died and its time to replace it. I just looked at a few cats for the blazeking a there pricey

thanks for the response todd and hold on this weekend its going to get cool

Not yet :cheese:

Still warm enough during the day that the house stays warm all night.

Welcome. No stack thermometer, no smoke either. How many cord have you run through the cat? Does it light right off on a warm reload?

thanks north I can get the 225-275f for the majority of the burn. but I never let it get to 400 before I trun it down but it gets 350F. HOT were the cat it located when the bypass is closed. solar not sure how many cords on this cat I got it used in late fall of 08 and I just ran it though the winter but the build up it the chimney was what got me thinking. I bushed the chimney about every other mouthand get about 5-7 cup of stuff out of it not sure if the cat lights off cant realy see past the metal sheild.

I think a better guide would be the stove top temp than the stack temp. Once you close the bypass the stove top temp should rise pretty rapidly and you should see little or no smoke. Do you know how old the stove is, it might have it on the UL lable on the back.

Im not sure how old it is the only numbers on the plate on the stove are the MFG date code wc 279 6 and the sc rpt dtd 10/24/83 other then that that about all there is on the plate . thanks for the though I for got about the plate todd

I haven't seen one of the older stoves. But, if you can't see the cat lit through the flame shield and you are getting that kind of build up, it would seem either you are not getting the stove hot enough to light the cat, your wood is not dry enough or the cat is done. The smoke from the stack should disappear quickly when you close the bypass. What kind of burn times are you getting with a full load in the normal range on the tstat?

I can get about 12 hr or so of burn time the wood is dry I burn maple oak elm and some other hard woods. if the flame sheild wasnt in the way I could see the cat but I have to have the door open to see it theres no window in the door.

Does it have a thermometer above the cat enclosure? If so, can you see it go up when you close the bypass?

Sounds like you need a thermometer on the cat to figure this out. It should shoot right up when you close the bypass if it is working properly.

do you know what lenght the thermometer is I now theres diffent ones and thanks for the help.

No idea, the one on mine is branded Blaze King.

Blaze King has excellent support of their stoves. They can help you with information on your older stove, as they have with mine.
