Figure 1 square foot has maybe 4 splits if roughly 6" round, trapezoidal, etc. You have 32 square feet so you would get 32x4=128 splits in a face cord (1/3" cord) or 3x that = 384 splits in a cord. It all depends on how large his splits are but he is certainly making a killing and he doesn't even have to deliver it.

Maybe if you buy 5 you get the 6th free.

I have seen stacks on peoples driveways for sale with about 12 pieces for $10.

It looks like split wood will get really expensive if you don't have a place to store it so you must buy small amounts at a time.

If I had to pay $1 per split that would really take the fun out of loading the stove.

If your math is right, that is $128 per face cord.

A slightly worse deal?

"FACE CORD OF OAK AND HICKORY 1-2 YEAR SEASONED. ADD IT TO YOUR REGULAR FIREWOOD AND GET THOSE LONG NIGHT BURNS
CUT, SPLIT, AND DELIVERED. $150.00 FACE CORD EXCELLENT FOR WOODSTOVE BURN OVERNIGHT. FREE DELIVERY AND FREE KINDLING."

Its even in all caps, so that must mean its such a good deal he has to shout about it.

I averaged about 786 splits/cord in what I burned last year. Perhaps I just split them smaller than others... It of course comes down to how you split them (and how tight you stack). In any case $1/piece is not a rate any full time burner is likely to want to have to pay.

Then again, it isn't the way one prices wood if you are planning on selling a whole cord at a time either eh? I could just see it "Yes, I'd like 3 cords - shall I wait here while you count it all out or go home and come back next week?" ha.

If you split so they are roughly 4" splits, you will get 9 per square foot looking at your stack sideways or 864 splits in a cord so it sounds like your splits are roughly 4" across. If our craigslist guy is making $800 per cord, he is doing pretty well.

Interesting - I had not done that calculation but it does seem to come out just about right - leave a bit of space for air (don't exactly have square splits here) and my average does seem to come out rather good.

I'd like to get $1/split if I could sell them for that... as it is I figure I'm burning at about 13c/split here on average (5c better than last year).

I wonder if he would be willing to trade commas and periods for splits.
Or maybe even a keyboard with functioning punctuation keys.

ok.. I stacked my wood in a measured cord rack. I had to go count. I go 12 splits up and 22 across .. so 12x22=264 x 3=792..

I paid $195 for my cord, delivered (in the same general area...) I wonder if anyone actually took him up on his ~$800 cord?

I have about 3 cords of wood in my yard for about 1 gallon of gas. About .1c/split. I live in ground central for scrounging. Every stick of wood within 1 mile of my house.

I think that is reasonable as compared to the firewood bundles they sell at gas stations and supermarkets, no? That is obviously the consumer he is targeting, not cord wood burners.
