So it's the start of October, Where I live (northern Alberta) this can often be the beginning of heating season. It's not so this fall but we have had several get the chill out fires. Also the nat gas furnace comes on pretty much every morning for a short time.

Just wondering if any of the 24 / 7 burners have tossed in the last match for the season (ie the start of continuous burning). If not, when do you think you will?

Continuous burning, for me, usually starts around Thanksgiving. Usually burn every night starting around Halloween.

If it gets around 20 (68f) in the house there is fire.

Burn when the house is cold. Not when it isn't.

Go down to the alter in the basement and worship the fact that we don't live in cold Canada. You guys outta move.

Nice! But I was under the impression that it was the best country in the world to live after Norway!

So far we are hanging in there to every 2nd morning fires. We had 14c again today. Last week -5 and then snow. It could be any time though. I will be fishing on the big lakes to the bitter end and in two weeks I will be in Haines Alaska river fishing for Coho so it might feel like spring again for a couple of days.

October 2nd and I'm burning my first fire this morning. I use my stove as my primary heat source and once we hit the 60f mark without heat the season starts for me. 24/7 won't happen for a bit though. Also time to start the beard! :)

Generally we start burning pretty steady by the last week of October. Sometimes earlier but rarely later. But that does not mean we don't have a warm day every now and then and we let the thing go out. However, relighting the stove still is minimal after that last week of October. Well, on those warm spells, as everyone knows, they can come unexpectedly during the winter months too but then there is usually enough coals to get the fire re-started.

I start usually late Nov .. thanksgiving week a lot times... but I still have some days/nights between here and there ....
I usually watch the high temp for the day... as long as we get mid 50s to 60s the house can take care of itself ..once we get a stretch of where the high is in 40s to low 50s with overnights in the mid 20s to mid 30s the house starts to struggle so I either light a fire or let the furnace kick itself on in the morning...
Lol I haven't even moved my wood up yet as we haven't had a hard frost yet ... bugs everywhere still

I did, about 22 years ago I had a gut full of New Jersey and headed north. (and that was even before it got really bad). You couldn't get me out of here not for love nor money. Lifrehere is what it used to be there 40 years ago. I'll stick to the plan of becoming CANADIAN SHIELD FERTILIZER some day..........................

Final match last year was October 2. It might be true this year as well after it gets lit this evening.

Seems to be the consensus. Everybody that lives there seems to love it. I wish I had been able to spend more time there over the years.

Still haven't lit the stove here... wondering it tomorrow may be the first fire, however I likely will hold out - then the weather is warmer for the next week. 24/7 burning likely not happening until November I expect. Then again, I can't predict these things - burn when house is cold.

my stove ain't seen fire yet this fall.

she sits cold even as i type.

she's ready, willing, and able ya see, but she ain't been fired yet.

No fire here in WI for me. I ran the heat for a cycle twice. I would drive myself outta the house with a fire now...

I thought about moving to the states once, but I have tasted your beer! Bring on the cool weather & grab me a cold one out of the snow bank, rev up the sleds and lets have some fun. :cheese: If you americans ever find out about hockey, good beer & get some good looking Canadian women, let me know, I'll have another look.

I also reserve the right to change my mind when it get's to -40 °C this winter. :ahhh:

I was going to hold off but I just got a great deal on 3 1/2 cords of nicely seasoned oak and I couldnt resist. I had to pick it up myself and after spending most of today lugging wood I figured it was time to start the year off. After this latest score I have about 7 cords, 4 1/2 being well seasoned.

I like to wait until after hunting season before 24/7 burning so I'm here to keep an eye on the stove. This year with a new stove even more so. Last year we had a mild November so it didn't really matter.
