We have a BIS Nova...this is our 3rd season with it. We burned about 2 1/2 cords last season...mostly ash and some dead elm.

I just cleaned the chimney yesterday. I got somewhere between 1/2 and a full coffee can of soot. Most of it was powdery, and there were some crusty flakes that come off easily. Seems like most of the buildup was down closer to the firebox. Not much in the top 1/2 of the pipe.

How much soot do you get from your stove?

Each setup can vary a lot and it also depends greatly upon your fuel. It sounds as if you are doing just fine. Continue on that way! lol

How much soot from our stove? After 2 full winters and 6 full cord of wood we got maybe a cup full. We did not clean it after last winter's burn because, the chimney is still clean. We'll probably go 3 years before cleaning but for sure we still check it annually. And to recall those times when we cleaned the chimney 3 or 4 times per season! lol The key is good dry wood and a good stove along with good burning practices.

Hey Islander, how about putting your stove type in your signature line? That gives everyone the information about what you have. Lots put in their stoves, their saws, their wood gathering and hauling equipment and some even put in some information about their wives! Just check out my signature line.

Thanks for the soot info. We don't heat 100% with wood, and don't always get up at night to reload, so that's probably why we build up a little more soot. Nothing looked worrisome to me while cleaning.

This years wood should be good and dry...working on next years now. Lots of Elm for next year...need to cut a few Ash trees to balance it for some variety.

I updated my Sig...so a little more about my setup:
