I'm extremely skeptical... to the point that I will buy a beer for the person that proves the following statement wrong.

I don't think you could ever get lava rock to properly work as a catalyst in any wood burning appliance without some sort of miraculous help from other chemicals etc.

IMHO, that guy is full of BS.

No thanks. I'll stick to the regular cats.

I agree 100%. Combustors have a wash coat that has extremely expensive precious metals (usually platinum and/or palladium) in it. That is the catalyst, not the substrate itself. Pure hooey IMO.

I thought it was a little weird my self. think the guy that thought that one up was off his rocker. :snake:

Go to a different dealer or ask his/her boss.
You can replace it with allot of things, but that don't mean it will work..

That's crazy. Catalytic converters contain rare earth metals like platinum just like ones on cars. Is those metals that enable the chemical reaction that occurs in the cat. These metals are expensive and there's quite a market for stolen catalytic converters from cars. Some get stolen while the car sits in the driveway.

I haven't heard of anyone stealing lava rocks from gas grills yet. ;)

I used to work at a car dealership where the salesmen drank their lunch just like that guy.

Funny  , wonder where he heard that, maybe he even tried it? You should go back and find out more details.

no it was amember of this site.thanks god lol at least I hope not :bug: oh trust me bogydave I wont be going there anytime soon.your right Semiproheck they seal them off cars that are siting at the dealership if they can. I wounder if a cat off a car would work lol J/K.lol true todd but I dont think I want to find out more details form him :grrr:

Ask him if it's ok to burn freshly cut green wood when using that there lava rock cat. I'm itchin to know the answer.

Absolutely! Dem lava rocks are more durable! lol  Iguess I would have to see it to beleive it

Hey they work in gas grills so why not a stove. Maybe I can throw some lava rocks into my engine and it will make my burned up cat work again.

Agreed . . . someone who is giving advice like this which is way out in LaLa Land is not someone who apparently knows a whole heckuva lot about his product . . . and a person who doesn't know their own product they're selling is not someone you want to buy anything from . . . especially if he tries to get you to buy some lava rocks he has in his showroom when it comes time to eventually replace the cat. ;)

lol it would be a cold day in hell before I'd try lava rock in my stove and that dealer is out of his mind :zip: I'd say a few other thing but I dont want to get banned form the site.

your so right jake he's so far out in left feild its not funny one day someone is going to try some of his advice and get hurt really bad or even killed.

Yep, you can burn super wet wood with a lava rock cat, but pine is the prefered wood for use in a lava rock cat stove. That way if the house burns down, or the stove implodes or whatever, you blame the pine and not the rock!!!! plus that thar lava rock holds up to thermo shock wayyyyy better than sum danged ol hunycombed cat evr culd!!!!!!! Got sum pre cut rigt her fer ya if ya need em. Light weght pumis fire brick linnrs 2. Make ya a pakage deal on em. Wada ya say, any takers??????

Lava rock is used as a catalyst and as a substrate for catalysts in certain other applications (chemistry), so he may have been confused. It has a large surface area because of the pores etc, which is more area for certain interesting surface catalysis processes... but Probably not the one of interest here

I just don't think I would try just plain lava rock I like my home and just don't want to burn it down loljust to find out it didn't work

Wow thats a great idea. I was thinking of doing this and did a search for replacing my cat with lava rocks, found this thread. Its definitively not going to have the same effect as the catalytic converter but lava rock is kinda like ceramic, so heat hitting it is going to be radiated back (think there are several type of heat, but can't remember from physics). In theory this heat may burn unspent fuel (smoke). They use ceramic tile on the space shuttle (or used to guess the government thought space just sucks) and they could never find a replacement. Its a Jotul number 8. I would replace it with the cat but Im broke and baby needs new shoes.

I would agree that the lava rock will almost certainly not work properly as a catalyst in the stove. Beyond that, if it doesn't work right, creosote can be a real problem, I would think that the rough surface on the lava rock would catch creosote allowing it to build up and create an exceptionally dangerous situation.
