Hi all new poster but long time lurker. Thanks to this site I steered my mom in the direction of the englander nc 30 for her old renovated farm house. Did the removal of the old blaze king and installation of the new stove yesterday all went well and lit first fire. Me and my buddy went outside to pick things up and suck down a few beers. Went back in to see how things were goin and she said draft control rod will not move so i kind of gave her a look like yeah rite. Sure enough that thing will not budge. Anybody ever experience such a problem? I dont see anywhere that its accesible. There was a look of dissapointment in her face ,I assured her its got to be something simple. Help!

That happened with mine one time last season. After a momentary panic I grabbed the rod and gave it a hard yank and it freed up and was back to working fine again.

I got pretty firm with it ,of course didnt want to do more harm then i thought maybe when it cools down it will free up but not the case. Not what i expected out of a new stove, its got to be simple.

I just got back from my moms. I got pretty aggresive with the draft rod with no good results. This mechanism is not accesible without a torch it will be iteresting to see how they handle this matter. The blaze king was 30 yrs old and had seen better days.

The draft control shouldn't take much more than a flick of the pinkie to move, at least that is how mine is. I just installed it last month. See if you can find anything in the oak intake (bottom rear) with mirror and a flash light you might be able to see if there is something amiss that way.

I can see the plate that adjusts the air intake covering the hole, there is movement when the rod is worked but it is minute with no function something has lodged in there

Hey,
I just got a nc30 with the same problem, the draft control was stuck pretty good, if you go around the back where the air intake is and fidget with it it might come loose, you have to push up on the plate and it might help to have another person move the rod. That didn't really work for mine so I finally sprayed a little lube up there and it has worked perfectly since. You might want to use graphite if you are concerned about combustibility but I just used an oil based and it was about a month ago and it has not affected anything but havent had it blazing yet, just a little break in fire.

Yeah I tried a screwdriver back there as my mom worked the rod but no go

Update, talked to customer service today. They are shipping a new stove, Im impressed. Still hoping to get a complimentary blower for having to take the legs off, put pedestal back on, remove from house, take to Do It center, pick new one up, take pedestal off, put legs on, and reinstall. Quite a pita. Im beginning to wonder about the draft mechanism being buit within the body. I was considering this stove for myself next year. I currently have Napoleon 1400, I like the stove but lookin for a bigger one.

Moving any stove is a pain, usually in more than one area of the anatomy!

On my 13NC I put it on its back to switch the pedistal to the legs and noticed a good cup full of blasting media that came out. I bet some of that got jamed in somewhere and with the additional heat of the stove locked it up.

I can agree with wanting the fan out of it. Doing those legs twice should of cut the price in half at least.

Now I am having second thoughts.........

If it is second thoughts on purchasing one, I'd say you can't be the stove for the price. I certainly have never had this trouble and don't hear of it too often.

"Stuff" happens even to a quality product.

So I was just offered a used one season NC 30 wood stove for 650.00, the guy said that he is selling the house and he can't take it with him. If I do buy it from him I will have to rent a pick up truck; that's another 75.00 dollars and the gas which will be another 60.00 so the total would be 785.00 for a used stove and I could buy a new one for 965.00. Saves me 180.00 but I would have to carry the beast from the house it is in to the pick truck and then to my house. I think I will go with choice B 965.00 delivered by home depot...... What do you think ???

Do you pay enough taxes to benefit from the tax credit? If so, the new stove is less than the used stove.

Go Ernie :)

I did, and don't regret it. I went with Englander, too...so worth it !

Wow 965 from home depot. The closest one to me is sellin them for 1299.00. Im not positive but I think that is with a blower. Yes when i laid it on its back I found a fair amount of blasting media as well. The fellow at costomer service told my mom he would have to check with his superviser about the blower, I told her she would never hear back from that was Monday and she hasnt. I think to make another call.

The nc30 is no longer a concern. The replacement stove is in and running. The new stoves draft control is as smooth as silk. I figured as I tipped the other one on its back to put the pedestal back on what ever jammed up the rod would have dislodged, that did not happen. And a complimentary blower is on the, now that is great customer service.

Glad to hear it worked out. Once again, England's Stove Works exhibits great customer service. Nice to know you can still get it!
