I only had the ms390 and my father called me this morning that there was a nice looking 034av @ yard sale. When he told me the asking price I said pay him the full amount and bring me the saw. I have my father always on the lookout for a nice ms260 pro, but found this one that I couldn't resist. I'll keep it until he finds me a 260.

I have not seen it yet but he said it runs and idles great with nothing broken. 18" bar and chain. I'll look it over and get pics of it maybe later or tomorrow. My father says there is a date stamped 1992, so I figure it has to be the year it was built.

Anyone have any good or bad to say about this model?

What is this model worth in good running condition and good appearance, just want to see if I got a good deal or a really good deal?

I have a 034 that I got used about ten years ago so I don't really know it's history. This saw has always been hard to start but once running it would go like a ***** ape. I took it to the Stihl Hospital and they said that the 034 models had problems with the gas line from the tank to the carb rotting in the area where it passes out of the tank. A new gas line and full chisel chain was installed. A little adjustment to the carb and now it starts and runs super. I also have a much newer 440 Magnum but the 034 is a lighter saw and more user friendly. I use the 034 more than the big saw and just like it better. Enjoy your new saw. With the 034 you got a good one. David.

I bought a new 034 in 88 and ran it with a 20 inch bar till I sold it in 07. Didn't use it much from 2001 to 07 and sold if for $200. I like my Dolmar 5100 much more with its 18 inch bar.

If you need a like new manual for the 034 let me know, I have one in my file cabinet.

Great saws! I have two of them. Bought the last one for $50!

Finally had a chance to look at the saw. It looks to be in very good shape. Started it in two pulls. Runs and idles perfect. I cut a couple 15" rounds with it and it cut nice. I ran my fathers ms290 and although it also runs nice it bogs when I dig into the wood and this one doesn't seem to bog, the 290 is running a 20".325 and the 034 has the 18".050. The ms290 is I believe 56cc and this 034 is 57cc. Is this right without me having to do a search?

Another thing, I don't know much about the carbs but this one has Hong Kong stamped on it, is it made there or was this an aftermarket replacement?

There's not a running Stihl that I can think of that I'd pass up for $50...

acresinternet says your 034 has a 3/8 pitch, but maybe someone changed it. Also says the saw is 56.5cc (disclaimer: acres is usually right on the money, but I've heard they've been wrong before)

I confuse myself with the different size chains. I have a cheapo homelite with the 3/8lp so this would be the thinnest kerf chain available, right??????????? Next size up would be what comes with the ms 290 which is the .325 and my ms 390 and this 034 have the next size up kerf which is the .50

Is this sizing order correct? What is the thinnest to thickest chains? there is also a .63

I think you are getting some of the numbers confused.
You have Chain Pitch which should be 1/4, .325, 3/8, .404, 3/4 (that's smallest to biggest, but you rarely see the ones at either extreme)
Then you have Chain Gauge which is (smallest to largest) .043, .050, .058, .063, .080, .122

I was completely in the dark. Thanks for posting this. So this 034 is 3/8 with the .050 chain

What chain gauge would the 290 have with the .325

.063 if it's a stihl bar. if it's an oregon chain and bar then it possibly could be something else like .050....
