Hi All:
This is my 3rd season with a Drolet 1400i. It is connected to a 6" liner which I cleaned a couple of weeks ago with a brush. When I cleaned it, I removed the top firebrick and the ash/cresote dropped into the firebox. The insulation blanket was pretty bad so I replaced it with 2300 degree 1" kaowool (12"w x 24"l). It was a royal pita to put the top brick back in place with the blanket in place. There is a metal framed octagon above the firebrick which is covered with the insulation. I fired it up tonight and the smoke comes into the house & will not stop. The blower came on & the smoke goes up the chimney with the door closed but the unit will not heat up like it has int he past. If I open the door, the smoke pours in. I have doors and windows opened and the cold air return on the furnace on to clear the smoke. I have had smoke in the past, but it always cleared after it warmed up. Good news is that all my smoke detectors work.
Any suggestions would be appreciated
Jim

It sounds to me like you blocked off part of the channel that the smoke goes through when exiting the stove. Is the new kaowool blanket thicker than the old one? Why was the old one in bad shape after only 3 years? Can you adjust the new blanket through the flue collar when the pipe is removed?

Matt

I will take it apart tomorrow after it cools down to see where the channel is located and reposition the blanket. I could not get the spec on the original blanket so I do not know on thickness. The blanket probably had help when I took it apart as it was my first time. I can adjust the blanket through the flu tube.

I know on my Osburn the blanket can be difficult to get into place. I had to take it all apart to make sure my liner was in the collar all the way. Either your new blanket is too thick or it is bunched up and blocking the exhaust path. You can email SBI with your model number and ask them what size the blanket should be to rule that out.

Hi Orifazz

The metal piece you’re referring to, is used as a weight to avoid that the blanket gets “sucked” by the chimney once the draft gets going. This piece should go on the top of the blanket and not between the blanket and the bricks. Make sure you put this metal piece on the top of the blanket, otherwise the blanket will block the chimney. If after doing this, you still have some issues with new blanket, let me know. All the best!

When I put it back together the 1st time, I removed the flu pipe and placed the metal disc in the hole on top of the blanket. The blanket I put in is probably too big. The firebrick are 22.5" x9 and I used 12" x 24." Another thought is that when I dropped all of the ash into the firebox, it may have clogged the something. I will take it apart when I get home tonight. I also think I do not have the baffle in right. How does it go in?

Well, thanks to burleymike for pointing out the obvious. I emailed SBI and the specification is 1/2 inch. I have found it local and will swap out the 1" for 1/2" tonight.
I'll update after my fire
