So Thursday, Friday, and Saturday I was able to find some free wood in the form of dropped unwanted trees. Thursday's find was just under a cord of rounds of dead but standing poplar brought home in 1 and a half trailer loads, about 20 minutes from home. Friday and Saturday were a load each day of freshly dropped Chinese elm, our hardest naturally occurring tree in the region, from about 45 minutes away. Second load was topped with a bunch of pieces of some form of unwanted poplar from the same home. Ended up being a cord of elm and a few pieces of the other poplar. Also on a Home Depot run on Friday afternoon I found about 8 rounds of willow at 22" lengths at a house where a guy just dropped a HUGE willow. My stove only handles 20" lengths so I had to chop them in half and end up with 10-11" lengths.
A very productive weekend. I think it's the old saying demonstrating itself, "what goes around, comes around." The previous weekend I had towed my splitter up to divorced lady friend of the family and and spent half a Saturday helping her cut down some longer wood and split around a half a cord of rounds she hadn't had split yet. I had been waiting for some free elm to pop up for a long time. All of this coincidence, maybe, but I don't think so. Enjoy the pics...
