Have been looking at woodstoves for a few years and finally decided to buy. Really liked the Scan 60, but it has been discontinued. Looked at Morsoe, Rais, Wittus and Hearthstone Tula (obviously we like the contemporary designs). Still came back to the Scan 60 at the end of the road... Anyone have any feedback on these stoves? Anyone who has one, are there any forseeable issues with replacement parts due to it being discontinued? Anyone know why they were discontinued? Anyone know why SCAN does not meet tax credit? This stove is supposed to be 78% efficient.... Thanks for any feedback.

Scan is now owned by Jotul. For some reason that is beyond me, Jotul does not import their contemporary products to the US. However, you should be able to still get Scan. Try this dealer for a start:

Chimney Sweep Fireplace Shop

Thanks. We found it at Chimney Sweep last year, but they were out with the discontinue, so we ended up getting it through a dealer in CT. Apparently he bought all remaining items of the Scan 60 from Jotul. They are a great resource and dealer though!

Was that Preston Trading Post. Did they say what's up? Scan is still alive in Denmark last I checked.

Yes. Preston Trading Post in CT. Scan is still being sold here, just not the Scan 60. Chimney Sweep has a few models on the floor as did a few other stores we visited. PTP did not say other than the Scan 60 does not qualify for the tax credit b/c it has not been rated or manufactured here. Seems odd to me since it was sold here. They said it has nothing to do with efficiency. I am assuming that to be included in the tax credit the manufacturers have to do something which Jotul did not do for Scan. Many Jotul stoves make the grade....

I did hear why the 60 was discontinued but I just can't remember the reason. It was not due to a quality issue.

What I was told was that Scan used a different certifying agency for their stoves that the EPA will not accept and Jotul/Scan refuses to have them recertified.

Wasn't there a recall on the Scan60 about a year ago?

Yes, there was a recall for the door possibly falling off and causing injury.

Pffft. Is that all?

OK, so maybe it was a quality issue. :red:

Different stove but appears to have the same problem.

no... and they fixed that issue with a simple retrofit kit. Scan 60 is nice, I think we still got a couple in the warehouse, but the A10 has a nicer look, easier to produce at the Jotul foundry (its cast iron, after all) and outsold the 60 in the us market. They are pretty much the same firebox/capacity.

If you google it it looks like it met WA standards in 2009 so I can't imagine why it would not now. Can you not find one or are you just worried about product support? It looks like somebody may still carry it one state over from you.

The test that Scan used to get the products in to the USA was not the test mandated by EPA for the tax credit. The door issue was with the A-10 not the scan 60. And in my opinion the one door they had a failure with in the field was used to stand up after filling the firebox. If you were to put your full weight on most doors you would get an undesirable result. It was only one door out of all the A-10's sold ...Jotul was just very proactive and came up with a fix so that it could not happen again. If you are still in the market for a Scan 60 let me know. I am aware of a few dealers that have stock and maybe they would be willing to ship to your local dealer.

This is my second season running my Scan 60 and I have been very happy so far.

Things I like:
- modern design
- trim footprint
- small clearance requirements
- fantastic amount of heat that pumps out of the front
- giant window glass for viewing the fire

Things I like less:
- my inability to keep any coals alive until morning due to the small firebox (combined with my burning mostly soft woods)
- occasional challenges getting the fire going (which could be due to height of my flue &/or the recent mild weather)
- occasional problems with logs smoldering/smoking (again, this could be a flue height or wood quality issue)

Hope this helps!

Chilly I am pretty sure they allow use of the big pellet/bio brick in those stoves. They would both help with your burn times and the smoldering issues you are having.

Chilly, try something different to get hot coals in the morning. On a "normal", more horizontally-displaced firebox, you load it up right before going to bed, but then you have to leave the air control open so it will burn. Instead, burn a full load and time it so the flaming ends right before you go to bed. Then bank the hot coals toward the back of the stove and close the air control fully, like we used to do with the old airtight stoves.

Precaud -- thanks for your excellent suggestion. I will give it a try the next time I fire up the stove. To bank the coals, do I just push them to the back or also try to cover them with ashes? (I really am a newbie!)

Regarding biobricks and the like, I thought they were a no-no in the Scan stoves?

Chilly - just push them to the back, they'll cover themselves. I can't offer any advise on biobricks, I've never used them.
