SO... I never knew it was that easy to set up a 500 gallon propane tank to use for pressurized storage. I didn't get responses from teh experts here when I asked " How do i set up tappings for a tank" last month. So I guess i will just give those of you wh oread this stuff some help by now answering my own question. You need 3 ports. one for hot water , one for cold water, one for a gauge.

The tank was not that bad to move around. It is awaiting my plumber to plumb it up.

I went a diptube on top fotr the cold water...

Are you using just 1 500 gal tank? I found a 1000 gal this summer but they sold to someone else before I could buy. They have several 500 gal and I though of just putting in a pair of them. Weighing several options now in my head. The 500 gal do seem easier to move. I only have a 4" concrete floor and was a little concerned about the weight of a 1000 gal. 2-500s would definitely spread the weight out but take more room of course.

Birdman,

I hope you used the search at the top and read thru the 98 post listed about this topic. I am glad you got your tanks welded up. Burning season is just about here in mi.

Have fun,
Rob

I hear you, I think there are so many variables on systems you are kind of on your own. I had similar quesitons. I had them add 4 ports to my tank so I have a total of 9. The existing ports were all in the middle, so I added to both ends top and bottom. I can always plug or valve and plug to be used later.

I went with a 1000 gallon because I found one for $300 but the extra welding and labor cost me another $275. Pressure tested to 65psi.

my threads are not great on one of the ports. I am hoping to tap it with a 1 and half inch tap.

Have a friend who works for a big commercial plumbing outfit. He has a tap 11/2 I can use... hopefully works to make teh messed up threads useable. My tank was an underground tank and the ports were welded shut. We had to cut off the tops.. and the threads that are there are a bit rusty and the thread are not usable.

I guess if this does not work... I can have my welder guy come back and weld on a pipe to the top with the top of the pipe being threaded on the male side.

My welder guy was funny.. I told him about all the discussions on here about welding these tanks... he was like.. christ.. its just a piece of metal... its not rocket science! THe tank was already cleaned out before he started welding.. but yes.. he was sure he was safe before he began welding.
