this summer i baught an empyre pro series 200. yes, an outdoor gasser!! this past sunday i fired it up for the first time. went well except for 1 small problem. had to adjust the smoke bypass door. it was leaving about a 3/8" gap when the loading door was closed, which would not allow the gassification process to occur. once this was corrected the gasification process occurred and we were off and running. had a little bit of smoke for about a minute until the gasser kicke din then a very clean stack.

since this is my first experience with any gasser there was a small learning curve. i had let the water temp at the factory setting of 180. this was too hot for the outside temp. it reached 180 very quickly. it was about 60 deg outside, so there wa snot much of a heat demand. it stayed in the 180 range all day without firing. i dropped the water temp to 150 monday morning, which made a big difference, allowing the stove to cycle more often and not letting the fire to die out. since lowering the water temp it has been doing very well. last night we had our first frost, stove worked even better with the cold temp and more of a demand for heat from the house.

since sunday i have used the equivalent amount of wood in 3 days that i would have used in 1 evening in my old indoor traditional wood furnace. a major bonus. that along with the unlimited domestic hot water, it has been a pleasant experience so far.

will keep posting with updates..... any questions on the empyre pro series PM me.

Sounds like you now know what heat storage tanks are all about. Keeping the boiler running hot all the time regardless of outside temperature and heat demands.

Most people who have not run a wood-fired hydronic will look at you funny when you say the unit works better the colder it gets.

But it's true in my experience.

So, this empyre . . . this is the ProFab unit??

yes. the empyre pro series line is made by pro fab. it is basically the same as the old greenwood models, just made by a different company.

Ya this early in the season the 180 -185 setting will not work to well. So far this seaon I am doing much better w my GW compared to last year. I hope this holds true for the rest of the season also.. Good luck as many sai to me last year the first season is a huge learning curve. I was very frustrated w mine last season. Load the unit according to the outside temps. Trust me a lot of trial and error. I put 3 small rounds in last nite at 9 pm this morning at 7am basically still had 2 left. house temp is set at 72 outside temps of basically 30 last nite.

Don't you have to worry about condensation or boiler shock if running at 150 degrees?

Havent had any condensation. since im new to this it may sound like a stupid ? but what is boiler shock?

Ok. i did some homework. boiler shock is the rapid exspansion due to sudden differences in heat. my boiler is set at 150 right now. it will fire the blower when water temp reaches 140 to heat it back up to 150. there is a 10 deg difference there. should i be concerned?

I would call Empyre and ask them about temp. I thought about buying a Empyre pro from a dealer was used for a season. They told me they were using it to heat their pool in the summer and were running the boiler at 140. I ask the midwest empyre rep if that temp would hurt it and he said it was not the best for the boiler and didn't recommend getting that one.

That may have been his opinion only, I do not know.
