I read alot of posts over the past year or so stating that penningtons natures heat pellets were crap. that they don't through off much heat, leave alot of ash blah, blah blah. you know the routine. Well against my better judgement I bought a few bags last year and I have to tell you that I was so impressed I bought 3 tons. They threw off more heat than lignetics which I thought was amazing. The ash was no more than any other brand I've ever burned. So this year I've been "shopping" around and Woodbourne Lawn And Garden are selling penningtons $230 a ton. Not natures heat mind you. The bag reads wood pellet fuel "oak". So I'm burning my first trial bag now and again I'm impressed. Looks like my search for pellets this year has ended . It's Pennington for me. So for those of you out there who take pellets reviews as gospel, just try them out for yourself. don't let others decide for you. That's the best advice I can give.

Minakena, I have also read many negative things about Pennington's, but first off, remember that different pellets burn different in different stove/exhaust set-ups......what works for one home might not for another.

That said, I will tell a little story about the only Pennington's I ever bought & burned.

I answered a Craig List ad 2 years ago for some pellets. The lady was selling because she couldn't figure out how to use/clean her stove. The majority of the pellets were Lignetics, but she also had about 4 bags of Penningtons that she forgot about, and she just gave them to me as part of the deal.

When I unloaded them at home, I noticed that they said "oak" pellets....I had never seen that before on a Pennington bag. They didn't even mention them on Pennington's website. After opening them and smelling the great Oak smell, I proceeded to burn them, and they were a GREAT pellet!

No one on this forum remembered seeing Oak Penningtons, but there they were. Now I see your pic of the bag, and am wondering if this is the "new" Pennington bag, or old? I would have NO problem burning them.

Maybe, but I can tell you some things for facts.

1. Lots of people on here had problems with them initially.

2. Pennington fully refunded about 95% of the people that had complaints, and those people were satisfied with the good customer service.

3. I burned 15 bags last year and was surprised and delighted to find them one of the better pellets I have burned.

4. I bought 2 tons this year, and am burning them now. They burn clean and hot, with very little fine powdery ash that does not clump together like some of the lesser quality pellets I have burned.

I like them this year as much as last.

5. I have burned many different brands of pellets. When I say they are good, I am comparing them to Lignetics (green label) and Hamer Hot Ones.

I think I have some experience with operating my stove, and different brands of pellets.

You can choose not to try them. I will keep burning them until there is a problem.

6. I do not work for Pennington, and do not have any financial interest in their operations, or anything to do with pellets or pellet stoves.

Mark :)

Sure they feel hot burning, it's still early fall and in MD they still have palm tree's growing on the O.C. boardwalk..................
I'm burning them as I speak and there ok for $150 ton.., all I burned for many years till last year found this forum and realized there's better pellets out there.

Yes your right about the different stove set ups etc.. and there are many other factors involved also. Just sayin that my own personal experience was positive so don't always believe the hype bec ause what might not work great for one may work great for another. This is the first year that Woodbourne lawn and garden are selling pellets so I'm assuming that they are "new". But as I have learned from the past, never assume anything!. I'm going to pick up 4 tons next week but first I have to make room in my basement. Isn't it amazing how much junk you can accumulate?

Good point, but I do appreciate how clean they burn in my stove. I get a nice very light yellow flame with blue mixed in. Versus very Orange to deep orangish yellow on the "Cleanfire" Supremes.

The ash on the Penningtons is very light and powdery versus think and clumpy with the Cleanfires.

I have burned quite a few different types of pellets and I can tell you my stove and glass stay cleaner with the Penningtons versus the "Cleanfires"

With the "Cleanfires" I get stringy things hanging down from the flame guide that look a little like fuzzy stalagmites, or stalactites ( I forget which is on the top and bottom of a cave)

Yes, I would like to have had Green label Lignetics or Hamer Hot Ones as my first choice, but the dealer who deals those is 45 minutes away, while these were at Home Depot for 219.00 per ton.

Compared to the Cleanfires, the Pennigtons are a 10 out of 10, while the Cleanfires would be a 4 out of 10, and the ACP would be a 2 to 3 out of 10

Compared to Lignetics, Ligs being a 10 out of 10, I would give them a solid 6 or 7, while the cleanfires would earn a 2, and Appling County Pellets(ACP) would be a 1.

Of course for the price, 269.00 for the Lignetics, I would probably buy the Pennigtons for 219.00 per ton.

Of course, i will be burning them a lot, so I will be sure to post my experience after 1 ton, 2 tons, etc. and If I have a problem with them, I will be sure to post that.

The ones I am burning are Natures Heat.

Mark :)

Right now the only place that has Penningtons near me is wallmart. There trying to get $6.00/bag. With better pellets going for far less than that? No way in heck would I bother!

Oh, I tested them. You just never looked(See the bigbox)! IMO nothing is worth $6.00 a bag or $300 a ton right now. Not with some of the top brands going for right around $240/ton. It's the price that gets me! Biased my foot! >:-(

Hey folk. Haven't been around since last February or so.

Getting into the '10-'11 burning season. Haven't bought for the season; I'm sampling a few different bags.

I bought 2 bags of Nature's Heat at Wallyworld last night - $5.00/bag. Started burning the first bag today. They don't seem terrible so far. We'll see what the ash looks like in a day or two.

I also bought 2 bags of "Freedom Fuel" at Homedepot last night for $4.<something>/bag (selling for $219/ton) Those will be next.

I burned 3 bags of Barefoots last week. Those were very nice with good heat and not too much ash.

I want to try and get a few bags of Maine Woods if I can, then I have to think about ordering about 4 to 5 tons real soon.

Welcome back Gweeper.

As far as those pellets you mentioned above, if you can get the Barefoots at anywhere near a decent price (compared to the others), don't even think about the others....the Barefoots are a VERY good pellet.

I also had good results with the Penningtons last season....low ash, good heat, and little if any clinkers. They're $250 a ton at our local Wallyworld here, and Home Depot has Stove Chow  for $219. I tried a bag of those just to see....omg they were just as bad if not worse than the Appling County pellets I tried 2 years ago. I ended up buying 2 tons of Energex @ $235 a ton to get me started for this season and I'm very pleased with them. Time to burn!

I burned two tons of Penningtons oak from HD last year. They were tasty and smelled good like oak!

this "real world testing" fails to address significant weather factors

Ahhh, Even if "real world testing" did you'd still find something to b*tch about. Tell the world how to correct for the weather factors and just maybe it will happen. You just don't give up.

I'll just go back to testing for myself and you can go b*tch about something else! Had it with you BS! You just do get it dude!

POOK! Knock it off.....you just LOOK for something to complain about. There is NO WAY to do your kind of testing and have a normal life.

I have an idea, since you're so worked-up about weather effects on pellet burning, why don't YOU do all the testing and give us a report. And we want testing:

1. relative to OUR different areas of the country
2. testing done in those diff. areas AT NIGHT
3. testing during wind, snow, rain, thunderstorms, lightning, hurricanes, tornadoes
4. testing during the fall, winter, and spring

And don't come back & complain....this is what YOU want.

I agree with you, jay & mac. You guys have helped me with numerous problems/questions. Yinz are the go to guys when I have a problem. Continue to voice yer reason, we do appreciate it!
