My Parents installed an RSF Opel 2 years ago, the glass is always black and it's a slow burner and doesn't put out heat like my Pacific. In fact it burns almost the opposite of my Pacific. Now I know they only have 13' of insulated chimeny so we will be adding 4' soon. Anyone here have experiance with this model?

Sounds like an air flow issue. There is an intake air adjustment on the right side of the unit that is accessible behind the bottom louver. Open that up, I think pulling it forward opens it. That extra 4' of pipe should help the cause as well.

Do you mean the air control handle? or is there something else?

If they are running the stove right, are you sure they are burning dry wood? Maybe try some of your wood in their stove?

Sounds good, next, make sure the outside air intake is not blocked or restricted and the screen on the flue is clean.

No, under the firebox there is a louver that you can open, unless it has been covered up with masonry on installation. If it is there, you open the louver and behind where all the electrical hookups are on the right side of the unit there is an air shutter. Open that up. The Opel is a great burner once you have the air flow working properly.

There is another thread that discusses adjustment of the chain / air control for opels. It seems that there are two other posters who have had to adjust theirs. They reported that from the factory the air control is partially shut in the fully open position. So naturally I checked mine, and sure enough same thing about 20% closed in the open position. I have not adjusted mine though. I'm happy with the way it works, but I do have 20+ feet of flue in an insulated chase.

All good suggestions so far. I think BeGreen mentioned burning correctly. If I want clean glass, (which I do) I have to burn hot. I wonder if they might be shutting the air down too soon as well.

hearthnleisure - thanks for pointing out this adjustment baffle... would have never known.

burnt2perfection mentioned his was 20% closed. Finally found the baffle you guys speak of and mine is about 75% closed. Will open it up and see if that heps with my burning issues on the Opel III I've posted about today.

Thanks,
