We live in a 2200 sq ft ranch, and have a fireplace. We would like to invest in a wood stove. We had a quote on a Harmon Oakwood, but it's really pricey. We need a rear exhaust model that will look nice. Any suggestions? We were quoted about 3000. for the Harmon.

Generally speaking, you will find that a new, modern EPA certified stove will run anywhere from $1,000 at the lower end up to $3,000 at the higher end. Another consideration is this: do you plan to line your existing masonry chimney with a stainless steel liner? Most of the stoves on the market today have a 6" exhaust, and venting into a masonry flue (which are usually larger in diameter) can sometimes cause sluggish draft.

i was in a similar situation in 2007. I live in a 2500 sq ft ranch in nc. I put a jotul oslo into a masonry fireplace as well. paid 2100 for the wood stove and 1100 to have it installed with a stainless liner. I love my jotul... look back at my old posts to learn from my story. good luck!

I like the Jotul F500 for this hearth if there is enough depth and room for side loading. There are some other stoves that might be appealing, but we need to know more about the fireplace. Julie, would it be possible for you to post a shot of the fireplace and to let us know what its size is?

Also, would you consider a soapstone catalytic stove like the Woodstock Fireview?
