(typing is not fun right now.....) :)

Well, earlier this summer I was splitting away with our hydraulic splitter and a hickory chunk slapped back at me and tried to push my thumbnail back into the cuticle. Result: Split nail, from tip back to cuticle, is still healing.

Now today, splitting some more hickory, I got a split stuck on the ram so used another piece of wood to force the other split off the ram. That piece of wood literally blew up on me when I still had my hand (same hand) on it. Result: Ring finger, tall man & pointer were totally flipped over backwards. :bug:

My grip is a little less tonight. (sigh)

Tomorrow: Oak splitting time. Should be interesting... Pinky is the only finger on the left hand not injured. :-S

EDIT: Upon further inspection, I guess my shins didn't handle wood splitting too well today either. That's just what I get though as I normally wear my Kevlar chaps when splitting (more 'cush' when a split flies) but didn't wear them today for some reason. :(

Ouch!

Sorry to hear that, sounds like a bad run of luck. You'll feel a lot better after you heal and that hickory is dry and blasting out some serious heat. God, I love hickory. :)

OUCH!!! Sorry about your hand. I had a piece of maple kick out of the splitter while vertical and put a 6in dia bruise on the side of my knee. Lets all be careful out there.

i for 1, am sorry to hear this. Hand injuries suck the mostest (yeah, thats a real word, to me). Be sure to verbally lay down the rules to the wood before splitting anymore. Sometimes all it takes is a good talking to. Tall man and pointer....I think thats what the Wiggles call them, you a wiggles fan (silly question, of course you are, who isn't)?

Shari....WHAT!?? You're a trouper, that's for sure.
It'll go a little slower, but you'll still git 'er done with that attitude.
The only oak that's come close to doing that to me is the gnarly ones,... so, maybe no pain tomorrow.

Thanks for the sympathy! Ring finger, tall man and pointer appreciate it! Thumb is wagging a 'thumbs up', to you all also!

Upon closer inspection, tomorrow I'm wearing my Kevlar to protect my shins...... :)

Shari, it is also okay to take a day or two off for healing. We wish you a fast healing too.

That would be nice but I can't. The oak is laying on the driveway, blocking access to our attached garage. We've got decent weather yet for a couple days and then the cold comes in. I would 'like' to be able to park my truck in the garage so have to move the wood. Might as well split it as move it = less work.

Shari

Dang. If it weren't for that pond, I'd come tomorrow and split for you. Contrary to what some believe though, I have not figured out how to walk on water yet. I'm working on that though....

Good luck Shari.

Chit Shari it sounds like you need catchers equipment when splitting.

Shari, were/should/wish you were wearing gloves?

Gary

Yes, I was wearing gloves - always do. Just to be clear here - the splitter didn't get me - it was a small split that I was using as a wedge to move a larger split off the wedge. The smaller split cracked width wise, jumped up off the ram and hit my hand flipping my fingers backwards. I removed my glove very, very carefully expecting to see bone sticking out of three fingers but there was/is no visual damage. Weird incident...

Hey, you could always hop on the car ferry at Ludington... :)

May I recommend splitting with an axe? :)

I was thinking hockey gear would be ideal. Shin guards, thick padded gloves, a face mask, and maybe even hockey skates - you'll have to adjust your balance, but they have steel toes!

Steel toe shoes are in my wardrobe - learned that one right quick! :)

While all these guys are lamenting your condition, I am going to actually DO something about it! I will give you all the Aspen you can handle, which will not explode when split. On the rare occasion you should find yourself catching a piece, the Aspen will be forgiving enough so as not to cause any more bodily injury.

And because you seem to have had a rough go of it lately, I'll swap you out even up this Aspen for your miserable Hickory :)

Shari do you split horizontal or vertical?

Horizontal - hence the steel toe shoes. :)

Shari, How is the paw this morning? Haven't been able to get over for the steel yet. Likely later this morning as I have a problem being rectified in the plumbing department at home a little later. I never got got your ph # so have not been able to advise. Chris.

Hickory has a very hard cracking sound when split....Scars me for life every-time I split it. I wear my helmet and chaps. (not sure if it would help but makes me feel better)

Give that hickory a chance to make it up to you, let it smoke a couple racks of ribs or a pork butt for you, after that I'm sure you'll forgive it.

Yowzers . . . sounds painful . . . get better soon Shari.
