Both those saws were brand new--your BIL's is going on five years old. I bought mine last year (just as the 362 was being released) for $550 or so with a bunch 'a goodies. $300 is not unreasonable, but it's not a bargain either.

I paid $350 for mine used off of craigslist last year. Came with a case, a gallon of b&c oil, and the remaining five of the six pack of mix oil the original owner bought from the dealer. I hapened to be the first caller, and by the time I got out to check it out the next afternoon, he had fielded over thirty calls from serious buyers--some of them willing to pay by paypal sight unseen. I think that you can't go wrong at that price if it is in good mechanical shape. Take some fresh mix with you if he hasn't run it recently, start it up and bury the bar in a big round of the hardest wood you've got...I'd bet you hand him the three bills with a smile on your face. Awesome saw, seems like a great deal to me.

Price seems very fair. Stihls have high resale value & the 361 in particular. SmokinJay sold one a while back on Ebay I think. He should be along here shortly.
IMO, more important than the price is that you know something of the history & amount of use. No-one lists a saw on Ebay & admits that they ran the crap out of it 5 days a week. So if you know your BIL well enough to know about how much he's used it, how he treats expensive tools, whether he knows anything about maintaning 2-cycles or saws....then you know way more about that saw than any other used one. That's worth much more than the possibility of saving a few bucks by sniping an underpriced one on Ebay (not likely btw). If you're in the market for a quality firewood saw, I say grab it.

If all it needs is a good cleaning, that is a very good price. If I needed a 60cc saw and it was available at that price, I would have bought it yesterday.
My BIL does a lot of timber frame construction and that's what the saw was used for. When I looked at it, it had a plate mounted on the bar that turned it into a big jigsaw. About all they ever used it for was cutting out arches for covered bridges. Maybe a little bit of firewood or felling. I wouldn't think ripping an 8" timber would be too hard on it, but don't know for sure either.
This saw hasn't been babied but it hasn't been abused either. I trust him not to sell me a bum saw.

I'd buy for $300. It's a good enough deal that I wouldn't even ask my wife for permission first.

After double-checking some prices on-line and your advice here it seems this is too good to pass up and I've decided to spend the coin and get the saw. I'll post some pics once I pick it up.

A 361 with an 18" B&C and a sharp full chisel chain is one awesome firewood saw. Next thing to running a light saber.

I picked it up yesterday. Sorry no pics yet.
I was happy to find it all cleaned up and a brand new Stihl 20" bar and chain installed! Too bad the chain was a safety chain, but I'm not complaining.
I couldn't resist making a few cuts in some oak rounds I had. Wow. This thing runs like a wild animal. It plowed through those rounds at probably double the speed of my 031 with a full chisel chain.
Now, a question. I've never had a saw with a decomp valve. What's the starting routine? The saw was warm when I used it and it started on the first pull without using the decomp valve. Also, I think you press in the decomp valve, but I don't see how you reset it. Does it reset itself?
My BIL started it from cold and I didn't really pay a lot of attention to his routine with the valve. I think it was valve in, full choke, full throttle...one pull false start. Reset to half choke and away she went.

Decomp is there if you want to use, but you don't have to. It probably saves a little wear and tear on the strater rope and other parts.
For a cold start, I would press in the decomp and then go through the starting procedure. I think once it "pops", you will need to press the decomp back in (or just pull it that last time without decomp)
It resets itself.
