We had an issue last night with our Harmen pellet boiler. The pellets we had in it had lots of saw dust in the bags that then got into the small holes in the burn pot causing it not to light. We emptied the old pellets out "they were a customer return from last year and we are trying to get rid of them" and filled it up with some Cubex. The air out side had that layered temp thing going on so the smoke from wood stoves and such stays low out side. Well after filling the boiler up and watching it so make sure it lit lots of smoke started rolling out of the burn pot and just as I said it seems like it has been smoking for way to long with no fire POOOOFFFF!!!!! I thought the thing exploded and was looking for glass in my legs from the window on the door. Luckily no glass because it didn't break or come out of the boiler. It blew ash out of any crack in the doors and such and scared the s**t out of my father and I. My guess was because everything cooled down the cold air was creating a back pressure on the pipe and let the gasses build up and then created an explosion in the fire box. The boiler ran great after that with a nice blue flame. Any one have any other ideas on why that would happen? The boiler has been running for 3 years this will be 4 never had this happen till now.

Sounds like a dust "explosion" from the bad pellets.....they were smoldering for so long, creating flammable gases, and suddenly lit all at once. Other people on the forum have had this happen in their stoves, although on a smaller scale.

Sure is a good way to keep the holes in the burn pot clean, as evidenced by how well it's burning now. :)

I'd suggest screening the dust out if possible.

Sorta sounds like the "release" that occurs, after having been constipated for a few days, and taking some Ex-Lax.

Another reason I'm glad I didn't buy a Pellet Stove (sorry folks).

Wood gasses built up with the smoldering and finally ignited when there was a flame. Same thing can happen in any wood burning appliance. It's why gasification boilers are so efficient, they burn all that energy instead of letting it go up the chimney.

Have a Harman Pellet Furnace (PF100) and the first year I had the unit dancing around on
the floor...Yea, scared the s*** outa ya. Got it under control now, just talked to it and
showed it who was boss.
Everything has been fine since then, just getting the cob webs our of the new unit. On my
third year now, all is fine and dandy.

Don't get too smug Soupy. It happens with wood stoves more often than pellet stoves. I don't know a wood burner that hasn't had it happen. That is the reason for the three screws in the pipe joints. So they don't end up in the living room floor when gases build up in the firebox and suddenly get a breath of air and go all at once. It even has a name. Woofing.

Well we learned don't try and use the junk pellets stick with the good ones so the stove lights. Still have 75 bags of long/strange/sawdust pellets anyone want a great deal?

Perhaps Mr. Smug Soupy would want them to mix with his firewood and burn in his wood stoves which he never seems to miss an opportunity to point out are, in his opinion, better than pellet stoves.

That is how I get rid of fines and junk pellets . . . . . mix them with the firewood burning in my Tarm boiler.

P.S. No thanks, I do not want the long/strange/sawdust pellets . . . . . . . Got enough issues to deal with . . . . .

P.P.S. Oh, I almost forgot to mention, my wood burning boiler has a warning on the front about gassification. Have I experienced it? Yes. After 29 years of use, I kind of get a feel for the circumstances, under which, that could occur, but am always aware. It doesn't pay to become too complacent or smug.

Why not make a pellet cleaner and sift out the saw dust ,then burn what is left . I have 10 bags like that and that is what I am doing .i will be glad to see the last of them .

I had something like that happen in my oil burner a few years back..... They called it a puff back...... Black soot everywhere......

I get some dust in the bags I buy and I put them together and intend to sift the sawdust out of them.

This is a common thing as mentioned with any burner of wood/pellets, etc.

My little prodigy when running on low (I burn the but shells) every so often the fire will burn low and then the auger will drop a spoonfull of shells and they nearly smother the fire.

This usually only happens right after the stove has been cleaned and the burn pot has little few coals built up.

There will be a time of maximum smoke, then Whooooof. the smoke will puff out through the air wash gap around the glass. This lasts only a second and usually the smike gets sucked right back in through the airwash gaps.

I have seen the Quads do this right at the point that the pellets are ready to light (auto lighter)

Mostly the quad will do it if there is a small clinker over the igniter element holes in the bottom of the pot.

Just part of life in the burning game.

What will set you free with a cord wood stove is to have it sitting building up smoke and not starting up like you want and you walk over and open the door and it woofs when the air hits the load. When it happens with the door closed I can hear the flex liner crinkle all the way up.
