I am burning away with my Woodstock Keystone cat stove and am happy with it, but am turning my attention to my 2nd chimney for another stove install and am considering a non-cat stove for it.

My Keystone with the cat engaged pretty much emits zero smoke - amazing! It doesn't matter if the fire is smoldering and the cat is doing all the work or I've got it mixed with a fire box with flames and the cat engaged - still zero smoke.

What about the non-cat stoves like the Hearthstones, Englanders, etc., with secondary burn tubes? When burning, do they yield very little to no smoke when burning as I have described my Keystone?

Thanks!
Bill

As long as your burning dry wood in an EPA stove wether cat or non cat you shouldn't see any smoke out the chimney except during reloads and cold starts.

If I was looking at non cats I think I would take a hard look at the new Jotul top loader and the PE T series.

Doesn't really matter if it is a tube or a cat, both should burn cleanly. Now there is a little argument that tends to lean towards the cat being able to "clean burn" at a lower temp than tubes. YMMV.

I agree. You won't see any smoke once up to temp. Even when reloading very little if any smoke. In fact even sub par wood doesn't send up any meaningful smoke if burning up to temp.

I burned freshly cut wood in a non cat Enerzone for a full season. I was a 24/7 burner, so only 3 or 4 cold start ups per year. almost always no smoke and after 2 years of burning (one with seasoned and one with green wood) the chimney was still very clean. I did have a straight up thru the roof installation, which helped I'm sure. All the wood stoves in my showroom are non cat, and after the fire has been going for an horu or so from start up, no visible smoke either. The difference in particulates between a cat and non cat, in my opinion, are so small and so vastly improved over the pre epa stoves, that few people would notice the difference. From what I can tell, people go with the cat stoves for the longer burns and for that, put up with the small additional costs and maint. that a cat stove requires.

When the Oslo is cooking with its secondary going (and when it reaches the coaling stage) there is typically no smoke . . . heat waves . . . but no smoke. I still find it amazing to be outside and see nothing and then go inside and find the fire going gangbusters.

I think that if you have been sucessful with a cat stove, you would experience success with a non-cst as well. They operate differently but both systems are excellent. If you want to read some reviews on non-cat stoves, check the Northern Tool web site...for instance, check the HT2000.

leeave96 I took these pictures when I went outside and stacked some wood, our Lopi Liberty stove top temp was 500 degrees when I went outside and started stacking.

The stack on the left is the 30-NC non-cat and the one on the right is the Jotul F3CB in the basement. Twenty five minutes after a cold start on both. A day or two before my neighbor asked "Oh, do you burn wood?".

Actually three wood stoves and a pellet stove. But the smallest wood stove and the pellet stove are resting peacefully and not being used right now.

Just the 30-NC heating the house and the F3 in the basement that isn't being used as an office anymore. On cold nights my outside cat is probably the only cat in the world with her very own Jotul F3 heating her digs down there. Proof positive that there is no fool like an old fool.

Both our stoves run clean. The buck is a cat. The hearthstone with it's tube ,board ,blanket system. Pete

I have a photo of the chimeny attached to the vigilant running without smoke somewhere around here. Happens more often than not.
