Another venting question?? I have a chimney with 2 flues the one on main floor has a accentra insert installed works great. Ipicked up a used p38 that i would like to put in my finished basement there was a wood stove installed. There is a 7 or 8 inch pipe sticking out of the brick that the stove was hooked to . My questin is can i somehow use this vent hole to vent the p 38 and how could it e done .. Do i run a liner all the way to the top and how would i connect the pipes inside the chimney ?? Thanks for all the help great site..............................................

Use the existing pipe. Run your pellet vent up & into it.
Make sure your PV goes at least an inch into the flue tile...
Trim it with a collar, made to connectyour brand of PV to
whatever size the thimble/pipe in the wall is...
Try it like that & if the P38 performs, well, you're all set.
If you think you need a liner to make it perform better,
you can always install it in the future.

THanks bob is that collar something that is pretty easy to find ? Iif i need to go all the way up the chimney do i use flex pipe from the stove to the top or somehow try to splice the rigid pipe to the flex pipe ? I t seems kind of strange how to connect the pipes inside the flue.. THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL THE HELP.. Do you think this needs outside air ?

Just one more thing before i try this on monday . The pipe that comes out of the chimney is about 3 or 4 feet off the basement floor but there is a clean out below that. Do you think the smell will come out of the clean out? I am just trying to figure out if i should just go out the wall or try the chimney first THANKS AGAIN

It's actually a bit more than a collar. It's more of an adapter that will allow you to connect the dissimilar venting together. Your local hearth shop should have it.

You should be able to run the liner down to a tee which will fit to your rigid pipe.

You're welcome! The outside air may be required if you house is extremely tight. It, like the liner, can be added if needed later on.

You can always seal the clean out with some unfaced insulation or kaowool, but for the most part, all the exhaust is gonna go up your chimney flue & the smells should go with it...

THANKS AGAIN

I was just wondering as i look at some of the posts on venting. Just about all the people on here say you must go all the way up with a liner for safety reasons.. But the harman book does show the pellet flue sticking into the collar that was used for the wood stove... If i can find adaptors to make it work . Is this way a fire issue in the chimney ? Just wondering THANKS

If there are structural issues with the terra cotta flue tiles in the chimney then you DEFINITELY wanna reline to the cap

Use the adapters & vent it into the existing flue. If you seem to be having issues with the drafting of the P38, then re-line. Save the money if you don't need to spend it.

THANKS

Yes you can vent into the 7". You will need to adapt the 7" down to the 3" but it can be done and will look something like this.

Click on the pic for a close up.

Be warned you may encounter some drafting issues depending on the length of that stove pipe. Your pellet stove's exhaust blower was designed for 3" pipe volumes, but that 7" pipe length may have significantly more volume than expected. If you run into this issue you simply line that stove pipe.

That's funny I ave the same set and up and am also installing an Accentra insert upstairs. If that goes well I was thinking of install a small free standing stove in my finished basement. I just don't think it will draft well in the basement. the previous owner had a wood stove down there and it stunk from the back drafts just sitting there. The other thing is it has to be at least 30+ feet to the top and If you don't go all the way up, what are the fresh air options?

I decided to go out of the wall . It was just to far of a run up the chimney and my flue is pretty wide .So just to make it easy i tryed going out the wall but i cut the hole on the inside and it looks like the thimble is not wide enough.. 2 inches to short to go together . The basement was finished before and the walls are out a little now what do i do???? Always something .......................THANKS

Maybe I don't understand but can you make and extender out of round sheet metal duct. I bet you can buy something from an HVAC supply place, have them make you one, or even make yourself one. You can see what the concept is with the thimble, so just try to replicate it.

Doesn't matter what it will look like since it will probably be inside your wall.

I don't understand my basement thimble is below grade and goes into a 6x9 chimney all the way up. to go directly outside from my basement I would have to go through my sill, I think?

Hi i live in a raised ranch house so it is not under ground. When they finished the walls in basement the are wider that normal so the thimble will not fit not wide enough .. Not going threw the chimney out the wall next to the chimney. I will have to make some kind of extender to make it wider that might work ... THANKS FOR THE TIP
