Hey All: I've been lurking this board for sometime now, and figured it was about time to chime in.
I've bought an Englander 55-PAHL, and am really liking it. For 26 years I have been cutting wood and falling trees. 40lb bags of Pellets are a lot easier to deal with. What I am not putting in my stove right now, I'm using for bedding for the horses.
Presently I'm using the Granulco Soft Wood Pellets out of Quebec. I'm paying $4.99 a bag at Rona, and am pretty happy with the soft wood. I'm wondering on how good they are going to be in the winter when it gets really cold.
I've used 10 bags in the past 3 weeks. I've only ran it on the 1-1 setting once it gets going.
Surprisingly enough since I put the pellet stove in (with a 6-3" adapter hooked up to my existing chimney) my house has stayed amazingly warm. It was 75 degrees in the family room when I shut it off (where the stove is) this morning, and with a good stiff breeze outside, it's still 70 degrees. It's just about 45 degrees right now outside. I don't think the woodstove that I took out was airtight for years, as the updraft in the chimney was something terrible when we put the adapter on.
I'm looking for alternatives in Southern Ontario for Hardwoods. I was at TSC the other day, and they sell the Michigans. Is it just me, or they look terrible. Right on the bag it says "Wood Fibre". Kind of reminds me of Particle Board.
So, any Canadians on here find any good quality pellets? Does anyone use the Pellets that are coming out of St.Mary's?

Don't know exactly where you are but I am in Trenton. Ont. I buy Curran renewable energy wood pellets made in Massena NY just across from Cornwall. They sell for $4.99 a bag at my local Home hardware. This is a big new plant (Massena) so you should be able to find their pellets in the area. I think they are a combination hard and softwood but i find they work really well. Softwood pellets tend to burn hotter but faster. In the really cold weather I think a hardwood is best.

Thanks FHS: I looked up my local Home Hardware (I'm near Brantford) and they have Eastern Embers for $8.29! Ouch!
I'll look for the Curran Pellets elsewhere, as it seems like they might just be local to your Home Hardware, and not mine. Thanks :)

Canadian Tire ,Home Depot ,Rona ,all sell them here . Also look on Kijiji you might find some one getting out of pellet stove .I have bought
a ton that way so far . I have saved quite a bit doing that .

Thanks FHS:
I just picked up 75 40lb bags of Granulco softwood pellets at Rona today for 15% off the FIRST 15 bags. Well, it came out at $4.79 a bag including tax. My stove and my horses are happy for the next couple of months.

I got in on that deal two ,our store was at $3.99 per bag less 15% I only got 20 bags because I already have enough for this year . I got the 15% on all
bags . We have a different brand Eagle Valley out of BC .I tried a bag they give good heat and burn clean . We are finally getting some decent prices In Canada .
I am tempted to get some more ,but I am running out of room . I will be a pellet pig soon .

WOW! 3.99? Where are you???
Yeah, I tried to tell the guy I wanted 1 skid (which is 75 bags) the 1 skid was the operative word instead of 75. So I had to settle for 15 bags at the discount only. So buddy who was operating the fork lift refused to put the WHOLE skid (shrink wrapped) into the back of my Dodge 1-Ton. So, I sat in my truck and let 4 employees load me by hand. They did a crappy job loading me, and I don't have my tailgate on the truck. So one of the guys felt sorry for me and made me a 2 X 12 custom built tailgate board so the bags would not slide off. Thanks very much Rona. Next time just put the damn skid on my truck!
I guess I'm becoming a Pellet Pig in training. 50 bags in the garage, 75 bags in the horse stable ready to go!

I am in Winnipeg .I think that 125 bags makes you a pellet pig .I am not sure of the rules but I think it is two tons ,for pellet Pig status . I am at my storage limit I had trouble getting my snow blower in the shed beside them .

Forklift guy did the math --75 bags times 40 pounds equals 3000 pounds. If he overloads the truck and an axel breaks I guess he loses two weeks pay. Must be against the forklift driverf rules. I tried the same thing with my skidoo trailer once and had t he bed riding on the tires. Anyway you got them home ---god luck burning them.
