On my Hearthstone Clydesdale insert, I am still about 6.5" shy of the mantel clearance. I explored several things last year, and I really don't want to move the mantel due to it being screwed in fast. I stumbled upon hoods
such as

I was wondering if anyone has used this method over using the bent piece of sheet metal or the piece under the mantel....Open to all ideas...

I've never used one of those, but with it only 4 1/2" wide it would not provide much benefit with my personal setup since both my mantel and my insert extend out farther than that. I am assuming the canopy-hood would be attached to the surround which is basically flush with the brick fireplace face. Just my thoughts which may not be worth a penny these days.

I was wondering about the width coverage, I was just thinking it might deflect some heat...
I really dont want to have to screw something under the mantel.
I've seen a lot of the pics of the bent steel deflector but I have not run across any post with measurements/gauge of steel etc.
