Hi

I am going to have a wood burning insert installed in an existing outside wall fireplace. We have 2 fireplaces, one at ground level, the other in the basement family room below. We recently replaced our windows and wrapped/re-sided the house which resulted in a smoky draft in the other chimney, not to mention the downdraft in the furnace flue. Our plan is to install a direct vent gas insert in the basement family room and a flush wood burning insert with an OAK in the ground floor living room. We plan on using the wood burner for ambiance as much as heat and might want to open the doors now and then to hear the crackle or roast a marshmallow or two... We wondering if there are any 2 door wood inserts, flush mounting, that open from the center available. I've looked a bit and haven't seen any.

Your thoughts??
Jeff

Lopi Declaration/FPX 33 is flush and have double door.

But...this thing provides serious heat. You can still roast marshmallow when you get a really small fire. But I won't attempt to try that with lots of woods in the firebox. :)

Cheers......Som

The Jotul C450 has double doors.

I just looked into this today, because I thought it was double door too. Looks like it did have them, if you can get last years model, but now it appears they have gone to a single door on the C450.

Both single and double door models are available in the current line. The C-450 can be purchased either way and is still made both ways.

That's my understanding from my local dealer also - Jotul C450's switched from single to double doors, but you can still get both. I opted for double due to not a ton of clearance in front of the hearth.

Thank you all for your responses.

Is there an OAK for the Lopi Declaration/FPX 33?

Jeff

I don't think so. They have OAK for FPX 36/44, which are the whole "fireplace" rather than an insert. Their OAK actually creates positive pressure inside the house to prevent the cold air leak from outside.

Thank you for all your replies. I have decided to burn the 2 door idea and go with one door in the form of a Quadra-Fire Voyageur as it meets all the other requirements and the porcelain mahogany finish will look darn nice in my living room.

besides...

it had the most realistic fire

Jeff

Jeff, let us know how you like the Voyageur. I am considering purchasing either that or the 2700 model. Someone mentioned it may be difficult to load lots of wood without having it fall forward. When do you get it installed? Your perceptions would be great, thanks!

Install should be in a couple of weeks. After that I'll be happy to give you the early impressions of a neophyte insert user burning as much for fun as anything else.
