Looking forward to having the time to put the GW back together over the long holiday weekend, I’m getting curious to see if that thing is going to work like it should. The red color on the shroud is ITC 213 ceramic coating for metal I found these products (used all 3) ITC 296A ITC100HT while looking for a rigitizer for the Kaowool we’ll see. Cost to date is around $500 because I scrounged a lot of the materials. There was a lot of shop time because of the limited metal working tools I have, for instance this job took about 20 mini grinder cutoff wheels run to nub to cut almost everything by hand. I don’t think I saved much by using salvaged steel from all the time it took to clean it up. If I don’t need anything special I should have this thing up and running by Sunday.

If it works as good as it looks, that thing will be awesome!

The only possible 'opportunity for improvement' I will mention is that I think you want to avoid having anything in direct contact with the refractory. When I put mine back together, the rock wool is touching the refractory. I've never put a thermometer to the skin, but, where the refractory is, you cannot put your hand. Where there is no refratory (near top and back) you can put your hand. I am getting too much heat loss by conduction there.

Yup, know what you mean thats also where mine first started to rustout along with the first O chit here we go! With all the dripping I knew it was just a matter of time... I could also see the hot spot on the refractory when I tore into it, in that spot I used 2 layers of 1/4" fiberfrax and worked back for a total 6" of kaowool.

I'm hoping that Shroud and the introduction of fire brick lining will help keep the heat where you want it. I first wanted to use refractory to close off the chamber but at $3.00 a pound to have made, well I went bac to plan B!
