Thanksgiving morning it was 5 degrees outside, 67 inside, and the little pacific just couldn't keep up to the 71 the wife and baby like it. last year I made it to december 10th before I had to flip the switch... it's always a sad day. the furnace will be on for the rest of the season to pick up where the stove leaves off.

Out of curiosity do you plan on upgrading the stove?

Nothing wrong with running the furnace, though. The whole point is to stay warm. I'll probably run mine tomorrow morning for about an hour as we are expecting company and I want to burn the cold out of the house by 10 am.

#1 in keeping Baby and Moma warm. Maybe Santa will bring you some insulation this year. :)

From Dec 2nd and on my BK will be left to go cold. My furnace will be taking over 100% for awhile. It never even ran last year. A total of 295hrs run time since 2002. New air filter in the Lennox, new fuel filter and nozzle in the Beckett and ready to sip some $5 a gallon wine.
I will be away for surgery and dont need Moma looking after two kids, working full time part time, hauling water, shoveling snow Etc... and Pack wood, run a fire and get distracted? NOT!

Cheers to you and your families, staying healthy and warm this winter.

North- I'm hoping that letting the Princess go cold is not normal practice during the winter, is it? I wish you the best for the surgery and pray for your speedy recovery. Just try not to be a whiny baby, Momma will have her hands full as it is!

What type of surgery?

Spinal/Back. A common procedure they say, So I will go with that. I will be around for a few more days to be a pain around here.
Thanks to ALL for your concerns. AND Now back to the OPs Original Question. ;-P
Cheers

Get better soon N60!! My furnace is now on also. Set in a way (programed thermo) that as long as I'm burning it won't come on, but when I work and with the holiday visiting I won't come home to anything below 65 for the new baby also.

I would like to, but it's just about the biggest insert I can stuff into my fireplace. And it's going to be cold all weekend- heading up north for a little grouse hunting. Have a good weekend.

Good luck 60, make sure you get all the P.T./ rehab they offer, I do it for a living and it sure makes a difference in the recovery time and outcome.

There are those times when it is simply more practical and easier to let the furnace kick in.................like this morning, for example. I have to leave in a short while, to take the wife to her bi-annual MRI for her M.S.. Doesn't make sense to light the fire, since nobody will be home all morning. The furnace will have (set to 65ºF) will have to be the chill-killer for now.

(I'll like it when we get HOME, though........you can COUNT on THAT!!)

Around here we do not have an option. We burn wood in the stove and that is it. I worried a few years back when I laid in a hospital for a couple of months during January and February but the wife did just fine. At least no water lines broke and she claimed to have no problem. I'm still betting she got a bit cold now and then but she would not complain nor admit it.

I too wish you well North. Heal fast.

I leave my furnace on all the time. While my Jotul 550 does a nice job it just is not quite big enough to heat the whole house and I also think the furnace helps circulate the heat, especially in the basement. I cannot complain since my gas bill was only $28 last month, it will start going up from here. I guess I cannot complain about the gas since I leased my gas rights and it should supply a nice retirement income. PA is the Saudi Arabia of natural gas.

Get well North, it is a pain that we all start have issues as we get older.

My 550 isnt coming close to heating the house... I need to get a block off plate to help retain that heat and maybe that will make a big difference. but my big ol chunk of steel in the other room can heat the whole place atleast with the current temps. My problem is being away from the house. Wifes been out of town for the holidays and I still have to work. So all week I been comming home to a house in the low 60's and the propane burning (I leave the furnace at 65 if the wifes there, if just me more like 60). I just cant get a long enough burn to last till I get home. Now mind you I mostly burn cherry, so some oak I am sure would help. I usually leave the house by 5AM and get back at 7PM. Want to replace the old stove with a new one soon, burn time will definatly be one of the factors.

Ohioburner, let me know if a block off plate does make a difference, my installer did not feel it was necessary, but I wonder sometimes. Our house has more square footage than the 550 was designed for but it was the largest insert I could find. I have found if you put a big Oak round it the back, with not coals in the back, I can get it to burn for a good 10 hours.
