I can get an 028 or 029 with good compression for $50 but it has no brake. Should I forget I ever saw it, or tune it up and put it on a shelf for emergencies?

Jays right, if that 028 isn't even built with a brake (are you positive about that? I've seen brake handles removed) then it's pretty old. If the saw looks good and has good compression I'd buy it for 50. Jay is becoming a saw snob, lol.
oh, and BTW, like Jay said. It's not a PRO saw, it's just made by a good company.

haha, Jay, that's what I mean. I WOULD produce firewood with it. That 880 has tainted your ability to see other saws in an appropriate light. I need to take it off of your hands to save your soul... you can box the powerhead up and send it my way anytime.smokinjay said:

It's a safety feature that I feel strongly about, as do many others. if you stay out of the plane of the saw then you should be ok, no matter what, but it's nice to know you have it to help. I also like to use mine to set the saw down or move around, though, without worrying that it could start moving with some accidental throttle, etc. Besides, I'm too impatient to let the saw spin down, when i want to set a saw down to move a log or something, I like to be able to set it down NOW...
Dune, what are you using for a saw right now? if you want a cheap back up saw, I saw an guy asking 45 bucks for a nice running poulan (shipping to your door included in price).

Granted my 028 isn't running right now, (see earlier post, taking to shop today) but it's from the 80s and has no chain brake. Go on ebay and you'll see these 25+ year old saws still command over $100 consistently. $50 is a great deal for that saw if it's running well and has been maintained. Safety features are just that, features and not guarantees. I hope that as Danno mentioned you always keep yourself out of the plane and watch that saw tip regardless of whether your saw has a brake or not. Don't forget the PPE

If your taking these old saws into a shop it doesn't take long to justify a new saw. Now If your good a working and finding parts it still a toss up. You need to love to work on saws to go this route. Your going to spend the money either way. Now an 026 or 036 or bigger your getting somewhere.

$50 ain't bad . I have seen POS MuckLug's, Hummerdelights, Pull-ons,and other assorted minimacs go at auction for $25-$50 NOT RUNNING. If it's got a good bar and nearly new chain eye'd work the guy for $40 and run.

20+ years of cutting and I have not needed/used /cared about a chain brake. Maybe tomorrow maybe different and I wished I had one! :gulp: But 50 smackers for a good running Stihl? Send it my way!!

I won't run one without a brake. Just personal preference - too much at stake. If the brake's been removed, spend the $50 plus another $30 or so and fix the brake. If you end up not liking the saw you should get your money and then some out of it. If it never had a brake, I'd pass.

Thanks for all the info folks. I have an ms210 and a decent jonsered 345(iirc) that I keep in my truck. I have a brand new Crapsman 40cc, and another good running one, plus an old homelite that still runs strong. I don't need it for backup really, I just like the Stihl and Jonsered so much better than the craftsmans, and homelite that I figured more would be good.
