I have a question for you guys regarding my Jotul Kennebec insert. I purchased the stove in March of 2009. Since that time i have had to have the door gasket replaced by the dealer 4 separate times. It kept fraying in the middle and then one time it just started to peel off. Needless to say my confience in my stove dealer is not high at this point. Last month the installer put a new thicker gasket in. It was so thick i had to adjust the latch to get the door to even close. Now when i load her up with a full charge of wood i can really hear it taking off. I could be 10 feet away from the stove and i can hear the wind/draft kicking in to the point where it sounds like a freight train. My question is....Is this normal??? How many of you who have inserts can hear the draft from 10 feet away from the stove? When this last gasket was first put in it passed the dollar bill test. Now after only a month i'm able to pull the bill out pretty easy on the top portion of the door but not the bottom. Any ideas on why this last gasket which was initially giving me a tight seal is now apparently not? Thanks in advance for your help.

Maybe your door is not shutting evenly..one of the hinges might be off some?
As far as a lot of draft that can be good..I don't know your stove though, does it have a damper and if it does ..does that help when closing it down some?

My stove makes that sound on a cold night like tonight. My doors still pass the dollar bill test. I put my ear to the stove and the sound is from near the stat, must be where the air enters the box. I have a 26 foot liner in an inside fireplace so I get a great draft.

How tall is the flue connected to the insert?

Be green,
20 ft lined chimney...and thanks i'll check the hinges....anyone know the best way to adjust the latch or the u bolt it catches on????maybe i did something wrong with that

Sounds like installer doesn't know what he is doing. I'm not a big fan of putting in over-sized gaskets. I'd simply go to the hardware and get a new one. Install it yourself as it is a very easy thing to do.

I'm guessing that poor quality gasket may be the issue or the workmanship of the install. It could also be pilot error.

As for the comment of oversize gasket, not all brands are sized the same nor do they have the same density. The original gasket on my stove lasted about 10 years. Over the years, I had adjusted the hinge and latch to compensate for wear until I ran out of adjustment. When I couldn't get my dealer to order me another OEM gasket, I bought Rutland brand from a big box store. The first thing I noticed was that the new gasket was nowhere near as dense a braid as the OEM. I was careful not to stretch the gasket during install which would make it thinner. I had fully expected that I would have to move the hinge and door adjustments back but to my disappointment, I had to leave the adjustment where it was with no more room for adjustment. The new gasket no longer passes the test and I can see leakage patterns on the glass already.

My plan is to buy a new gasket two sizes up and stretch it to reduce its size and increase its density.

If the latch is too tight, I wonder of the door might warp or bend and present air gaps?

Hey Weatherguy, When you say that the $$$ bill test passes, do you mean it would tear if you pulled any harder? My insert burns really hot with this years dry wood, cat temps around will go 2000 if the fan isnt running on high and I gate it down to a couple of dots above Low. I am just wondering if I have a air leak with the door? The latch on my stove cannot be moved any tighter because of the bend of the metal latch and the nut.

Maybe the door seal is Ok and this is the way the PI runs because its inside the fireplace and heats up alot. After a while it calms down to a lower temp on the cat and all is good. Just wondering if your PI runs this way?
