I am going to be installing a new stove, and for the first time I shall use double-wall stovepipe [always used single-wall in the past]. There are virtually no stores around here selling stoves or pipe, except for some "fireplace and stove" specialty stores which do not stock pipe, only stoves. So I cannot go somewhere to hold a piece of pipe and check it out. I must order everything online, pipe-wise, because this area of Colorado severely restricts or bans wood-burning except up here in the mntns where I live. [Which is why no one stocks pipe....it won't sell, or only rarely to an oddball such as me.]

I anticipate needing to use one section of adjustable double-walled pipe to finish up the install. My question is, after reading a post by someone about using it, when the adjustable section is expanded, does that leave a section as single-wall??? If so, it would mean that that area would need shielding of some sort as the clearance would be much less than the rest of the pipe. It is not a deal-killer to put a piece of shielding up, I was just hoping not to have to.

Thanks for the answers when they come.

Double wall expandable pipe, at least the one I have, when adjusting does NOT adjust one wall out of another, both sections are double wall, so to answer your question no. No shielding needed, for the pipe I have. I believe you will find the same.

Thanks, that makes perfect sense.

Wait this deserves expansion I think.

Double wall stovepipe isn't a pair of sliding sleeves, this surprised me also. Thankfully the section I needed was only going to be two inches shorter (10" vs 12" long) so it wasn't a disaster.

The way double wall adjustable stovepipe works is that it's "adjustable" from 10" down to 2", but the pipe is a 10" double wall pipe missing the crown on one end. The idea is that it slides over another section of double wall pipe the same orientation. Since the crown takes up about 2" of space, that's how it's adjustable from 2" to 10". However you need a full 10" of pipe for it to overlap to scale down lower.

you COULD cut it on the sleeve side, but modification of components viods UL certification, etc etc etc.

Go to your local Lowes-their policy is that they will order anything made by one of their suppliers. Selkirk/Supervent is a Lowes supplier so all you need to do is walk in with the correct part number, ask to speak with someone at the outdoor/seasonal desk, and place your order. Nice and easy and you save on shipping. Find what you need here:

And go order it-they'll call you when it's in. BTW-when fully extended the pipe is still double wall-it's two separate sections of double wall pipe, one sleeved into the other. I used double wall with an adjustable section for my wood furnace install. I could have gotten away with single wall considering I did a Durock heat shield with a 3" air gap above it, but I burn 24/7 so the furnace sits unattended for long periods-can't be too careful.

Steve, +1 to what others have said above. I would also add that some, if not all double wall pipe manufacturers want you to size the double wall pipe so that when it is fully installed there is a minimum 10" overlap of the pipe where the two pieces slide together. The overlap provides some strength to that "joint". John_M

err.
or use 46 tele or 68" tele pipes, then it is a pair of sliding sleeves
