What are u guys using for thermometers on your storage tanks. I will have around 14" of cellulose insulation around the tank sides. Is there a bulb type with a line to extend out beyond my insulation ?

I have a Radio Shack indoor/outdoor thermometer I use, it has a 10' lead. I am going to be installing a 1-wire monitoring system this winter. Check the data logging threads. For quick and simple you can't beat the Radio Shack, but it is limited to 160F. You could also try and auto parts store for a guage and sensor.

For a real "cool" setup, use digital panel meters with DS18B20 sensors. I have 11 sensors (most for data logging) on my tank, fixed to the outside with aluminum tape, and then the insulation. Works really well.

If you don't want a digital thermometer there are some industrial bimetal thermometers on Ebay here

http://cgi.ebay.com/Ashcroft-0-200F...085?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&hash=item3a610ea1f5

They have 12" stems and the any-angle mounts go almost 5" beyond the pipe thread. That could put the big 5" dial face out beyond your insulation.
They are designed to go into a thermowell into the tank but you could perhaps attach them to the wall of the tank with a big ball of thermal mastic if you could get the kind that doesn't run. They go for over $120 apiece at Grainger's. The shipping out of Canada will add $10 each to the price. He didn't get his minimum $2 ea price so he relisted them.

I mention them for you or anyone else interested in non-electric temperature monitoring. I already have a box of them from an earlier auction.

Thanks for the ideas. J.T.

I'm using Noshoks that are like the ones DaveBP listed. I have these going into the water so they read very accurately, Randy

I'm using one of these: http://cgproducts.johnsoncontrols.com/MET_PDF/125188.PDF I had it laying around from another project and put it to use as just a thermometer. I noticed that the price is up significantly from when I purchased mine. It's a neat unit. Programing is easy and it has a long lead which also can be extended. The bulb is, of course in a well.

I have the Johnson controlling my oil backup furnace, but a Stiebel Eltron with two probes controls the boiler and circulation system. One probe is at the top of the boiler, and 2 at different depths in the tank, in addition to the Johnson probe. All three tank probes are in a dry well made from 1/2" copper pipe.

These have two probes, one is designed to be used for a smoker and the other for grill. I put the grill one on the supply and the smoker on the return and then I can see what my tank temp is from the comfort of my recliner. Been using them for 2 years and they work great, plus they're cheap.

I though of using a similar setup to measure water temp & flue gas temp(outside of pipe). Does this one transmit through walls? Randy

They claim 100 feet with no interference but mine goes about 30 feet through 2 walls and it comes in fine. I'm not sure what the limit is though.

I think the max temp is 400F so I don't know if it would work for flue temp.

This looks like it would make a nice setup. Wish the cords were a little longer so I could put one at the top and one at the bottom.

The cooking probe is 3' long and the smoker probe is 2' long. You can order probes with 6' leads direct from the manufacturer.
