I was wondering what the average age would be of wood burners. I'm 29, been burning in fire places for a couple years to unsucessfully try to add some heat to a home, finally got my wood stove and started burning it this week. Seems that out of the people I know VERY few near my age burn anything besides a campfire. I however like the ambiance and know the savings burning brings.

I just got out the calculator and figured out that my average age is 62.

Can't be. I just averaged our ages and came up with the same number!

Well Redguy,

I was 29 when I got my insert, too. Now I'm 30. So I think we're the youngest guys around. Everyone our age thinks I'm out of my mind, but love the wood heat in my house.

El wrongo, calculator breath! Your average age is (1+2+3+... 62)/62 = 31. Feel younger now?

When it comes to being smart a$$, I'm afraid you're bringing a knife to a gun fight, good sir.

EDIT: Well, at least when it comes to being an a$$...

Was surprised at two findings on the chart thus far:

1) That most of the users are between 20 and 60
2) That those over 60, are very few.

Wonder what that says about the "older" folks? Tired of luggin wood? Have a "been there/done that" approach?

Soupy it may be that the older ones are not on the internet. My grandpa burned every winter until he passed away at 81.

I started at age 24 when I built my house, I'm now 61.5 My dad is 87 and burns every day, I supply the wood. We both love it and hope never to quit

Cowboy Billy: Good point! (Although, now-a-days, "Seniors" are MUCH more internet savy than say, 5 years ago).

29 here too. Get the same strange look when I tell people I heat with wood...even though I live "out in the sticks". For being in such a rural area there are surprisingly few that "heat" with wood. A lot of people build a fire, but don't heat with it if you know what I mean.

Wait a molment I am the only youngster roaming around? of course I am close to the other range

57 & I can't imagine not burning wood . I've been burning for about 25 years & you know you have the fever bad when you have a 2 year old stove , like it , but you are still looking to set up another stove somewhere ! :)

Wow, and I thought I was one of the few youngn's on here at age 29. First started heating with wood last year but have been "researching" (ie: spending many hours on hearth.com) since I was about 25 or 26 I think. The summer we bought our house I began scrounging even before I bought my Englander. The first winter was rough-$2000 oil bill! The second winter we were ready, I finished the installation at the beginning of October (I got chimney parts for my birthday that year ) and had plenty of seasoned wood to last the entire winter. I guess I've gotten my share of odd looks, but that's mostly from what I'm doing rather than what I'm saying. For example, the first time I was carrying boxes of newspaper from the office out to my truck someone asked "what are you doing?" "This is for my wood furnace," I replied. "Huh?" And so it went...but after two years none of my co-workers are surprised when I leave for lunch and come back with a truck full of rounds or pallets that I found on Craigslist that morning. I live in a rural community too where lots of folks have wood stoves, but few if any of them burn as much as I do. Most are the type that buy a cord of "seasoned" (don't get me started) wood for $200 in November and burn the stove when they have company over or when the power goes out. They kind of treat them like fireplaces. Most people are pretty surprised when I tell them that wood is our primary source of heat.

23. I Grew up in a house that burned wood all my life and the first thing i did when I purchased my house last year was install the Englander.
