About 18* outside temp.
Is that steam coming out of that pipe? Absolutely.
The colorful condar temp is flue probe. The other back of stovetop.
Those glowing eyes in the back of the stove are proof that there isn't any smoke surviving the exit.

Nice pics, thanks.

Aw, ya deprived us of seeing the stove itself. Can you post one?

Does the flue temp normally exceed the stove top by a couple hundred degrees?

Yes, it seems that early on in the burn especially, flue temps exceed the stove TOP. Remember those Harman temps on the sides and back?
I can't really measure back there with the heat shield, but I expect those temps would be considerably higher. And that is exactly where the blower draws
air up from and over the stove.

Pretty wife and pretty stove and handsome boy last winter.
C.J. and Taxi enjoying the fire last night.

I love the look of that Leyden. It was on my wish list for a long time. I saw one burning at a dealer here in Chicagoland. Very nice stove. Any problems with the refractory or gaskets on that unit? Looking close at it reminded me of my old Vermont Castings unit that would go through refractory and combustor boxes like crazy.

Nice stove, family and pets. So I take it this temp was with the blower running? That's not too bad, especially if the flue temps settle down a bit soon after.

Okay, somebody axed the pic of stove and family? Stalking hazard?

Anyway, not long after I posted those temps last night, the stove top went to 600* and the flue followed upward, then settled way down to about 500* with the stove still sitting on 600*.
After about 3 hours, everything was outgassed.

No problems yet with stove maintenance, but this is only our second season. I expect the combuster will crumble at some point in the future. How long?

Edit: Family pic is back up??

In the picture the wife and son have long sleave shirts on which means you do not have the stove hot enough. :cheese:

Lets not get on this topic again! If you recall, my normal temps of 800-1000

Nice looking stove, curious about your chimney. It looks suspiciously like single wall stove pipe coming out of your roof. Or possibly class A chimney pipe? Either way...nice to see steam coming off the top, you know you have a good fire when....

Maybe he was neighborly, and painted it black to blend in?

Yes, I painted the exterior flue black to keep from looking like I had a rocket sitting on my roof.
I gotta admit, I like it.

I literally wiped perspiration from my forehead the other night-- across the room from the stove. While...
wife and 16 year old were hovering over the top of it.
Daughter now has a nasty 5 inch burn across the top of her leg because of that.

I also painted mine black, looks better IMO.
Also sweating here a bit. Can't complain when it's in the teens outside. The wife keeps that baby cookin'. When she goes out for wood she says "I'm going to get some more fuel rods for the reactor honey"!

LOL Now that one I love. I hope she hasn't trademarked it, I am gonna use that one.

Just wanted to share for any potential Leyden owners who might uncover this thread someday:
With these cold nights the flue is settling in at about 580* probe, and the stove top is usually about 50* higher than that.
I've just recently been able to completely shut off primary air (cold). With the primary open just 1/8", the probe temps will stay up around 700*. Of course, stove is hotter then too.

Getting good long burns. 9 hours and a 300ish* stove ready for a re-load on coals (with blower off). 30 minutes of reheating and we're off again. This stove is really shining right now with the weather below freezing 24/7. Coldest morning back in the hallway was 69*. +2* outside that night. Heating 1800sf.
