We had a Mount Vernon AE insert put in a couple of weeks ago. We had a bad rainstorm and water ended up coming into the chimney and blowing out the power box. We had a guy come out to check the chimney to see if we had a 'leak' problem, and he said that the cap on top of the chimney wasn't installed correctly - that it wasn't screwed down into the chimney and that it shifted which allowed the water to come down. He called the stove company and they said that that's the way it's installed. The chimney guy said that in his 25 years he'd never seen one not screwed down and that's what the screw holes are for.

So, that's my question: does the proper install of an insert include the cap being screwed into the chimney?
Thanks,
Dave

I've also now included a pic that I took from the ground -- if that helps.

The top plate needs to be secured by screws, silicone, and or folding over the edges and siliconed. Dura Vent does not have screw holes in it's top plate and s/s is hard to drill through but can be folded. Depends on your chimney is the main thing but it should be secured.

i think if you paid them to do it, then it should be done properly.
