I hate messing with newspaper.. With Super Cedar or Fatwood and reasonably seasoned wood I just don't see the need for it.. I have a screened cap and use the top down method and alternate between my fatwood and supercedar supply and I have cleaner glass and less soot when I sweep as a result..

So, mesh clogged again - no paper use at all - so there you go.

Whether it's big flakes of ash (or bark, I'm using black birch at the moment), or (and I really hope not) creosote, I don't know - it's very lightweight, sooty without a doubt, and my wood seems dry..

As per advice though, I just cut the mesh out today - that will solve at least that problem.....

EDIT: as for the mesh - it was very small less more like 3/8ths (1cm)
Have you noticed if this has improved your draft? Even when your screen was clean? I'm thinking of doing this to mine. Thanks

Thread is way to long to catch up on, but I never had screens or mesh in a cap for thirty years. Last year I replaced my caps with the so called "deluxe terra cotta" caps that look like regular chimney caps. They have the 3/4" diamond pattern mesh. Some stuff collects in the upper row of mesh and under the plate on top but no clogging since they have a huge surface area of mesh. And any wind that comes along blows it right out of the mesh.

And you can see if those suckers are clogged from two hundred yards away because you can see through them. I check my caps by looking when I come back up the driveway from getting the mail. And they are hinged so you just flip'em open for inspecting or brushing the liners.

Love'em.

Hinged! Sounds neat. Do you have a link to them? I have never seen them. Thanks

I had good draft when it was clean, so I haven't noticed any difference. I am so relieved though that this won't be a problem when I have a foot of snow on the roof.....
