Tomorrow morning they are coming to install my first ever insert into my existing fireplace. I am getting the Vermont Casting Montpelier. I can't wait to start enjoying the warmth. I appreciate what I have already learned from reading here the past of couple of weeks and will most likely be asking some newbie questions over the next few days.
If you have any must know tips for the install or the first few fires please feel free to throw them my way.

First off welcome to the forum.

First tip have good fuel. Well seasoned wood. Try and get 2-3 years ahead on it if you have the storage space. Oh and if you buy your wood and they call it seasoned, it most likely isn't.

Invest in a thermometer. Til I got myself one I was shutting the air down way to early.

Insert installed and everthing working great. Been burning since noon today. Playing with the controls a bit and getting a feel for it. Looks good, puts out nice heat. It is a little loud on high, but I expected that from reading everyone elses reviews on this insert. Looking forward to winter for the first time in a long time.

Chris, -what is the size of the firebox on this unit? For some reason that info isn't listed in the specifications on the VC website.

Also, how many speed settings does the fan have and how is the noise level on the lower settings? As you can tell, I'm interested in this model also (along with Merrimack and QF Voyageur). Hard decision!

Thanks!

I am at firehouse today. I will get firebox size tomorrow and post it. The fan is a variable speed switch. On high it seemed a bit noisy at first but by the second day I was already used to it. A couple of volume clicks on the tv and all is good (for me anyway) As you turn it down to low it is allmost silent.
This is my first insert but I am very happy with it so far and my wife loves the look with the big glass front.
