Ok...Ive tried doing some research on this and know that the dry heat of a wood burner can dry out the plasma in a plasma tv, what about a pellet stove? Me and my brothers are looking at buying my dad a plasma tv for christmas. He has a modular home. If you think of the letter L, the pellet stove would be in one end of the L, in like a family room, then there is a kitchen/dining room in the middle then a living room where the plasma tv would be. Do I have to worry about the pellet stove drying out the plasma tv? Anyone have a plasma tv near a pellet stove? Any long term problems?

Really? I had no idea my plasma tv was having the life sucked out of it by my wood stove. I really did not, do you have a link?

Unfortunately, I didnt save any of the links. It is something that I had heard a couple years ago when I was buying my big screen. I think it was in Consumer Reports then. I was just in Best Buy looking at them and the teenage kid there said it wouldnt be a problem. In the research I did, does sound like the newer Plasma tv's have fixed some of the issues with them.

It's seems like this was brought up at a training I attended a year or so ago. I think the stove "guru" that was teaching it said that as long as clearances were maintained there shouldn't be any ill effect on them. However I'm not sure I would agree with that. Then again we were talking about having the tv mounted directly above the stove or fireplace. I also believe that we have not had these new fangled lcd/led/plasma tv's around long enough to say how they are going to hold up, even without the heat from our wood/pellet stoves pumpin the heat at them.

Just get an LCD or LED. Plasma TVs... they are almost as hard to find new as a CRT TV!

I put my Breckwell Pellet insert stove in November 2008 and about the same time purchased a HD Panasonic 50 inch Plasma right above it but of course have a mantle in between. Also have a smaller shelf just below the mantle for a Bose center speaker. If you meet the clearances provided by your manufacturers stove; you shouldn't have any problems. I love my Panny plasma. Had a Vizio LCD up there for a week but didn't like the picture.

Heat/dryness aside, i think a plasma will suck in a fireplace room of any kind. Plasma's reflect light due their their panel design. If you like to watch movies with the lights dim/off, i would imagine even a wall mount ABOVE the stove would glare like crazy.

florescent back lit LCD is still where it's at if you ask me.

LED still has a way to go, especially in terms of reliability.

plasmas are still plentiful, but they use a ton of electricity, throw a lot of heat, and weigh a ton. Their better black contract is about the only thing going for them now, esiecally with 240hz lcd's practically the norm now.

due to money reasons, I haven't yet, but I want to hang a 47" above my insert to replace my DLP. It doesn't really get that hot up there as the heat blows forward first, then it rises. Main main concern is dust from dumping bags in the hopper. the tv has a lot of fans/etc like a computer and it may end up doing damage inside with all the dust on them. I might have to shove a K&N in the spaces :D

Some of that may be true but but my Panny has an anti-glare screen and looks great in bright sunlight, also has a 600 Hz Sub-field Drive; more than the LCD's of course but the human eye can't really detect it. I think the new Toshiba 3 D without using those squirly glasses is gonna be the thing of the future. Oh and by the way I love my K&N filter.

I am not worried about the light at all. No fireplace and the pellet stove is in another room. This would be a big upgrade for a 60 year old man who doesnt rent movies, doesnt play games, is to cheap to turn on any more lights in the house than needed. A plasma would be a BIG upgrade of what he has now. I found a 42" RCA Plasma online at Walmart for $379. To go to an LCD in that size, I am looking at another $100. Am already spending more than we wanted.
