In The Woods
This is what was wrong with our splitter, (bent push rod) the air breather tube was weather cracked which they think let some water in (froze) and some how bent the push rod.


Should have back friday or monday the latest, they had to order the push rod and breather tube.

Ice can do some mean stuff! I was hoping the oil just got to thick. 6 degrees here right now.

It's about a $7.00 dollar part so the labor will cost the most, had it covered and tied down with bungee cords but that last heavy rain then it turned cold quick must of did it.

Thats a hard bend had to be water... You would have heard that if it was running when it happened. Brought mine in the heat Tuesday.

Smokin they called this morning fom the Wood Chop Shop and the parts came in and it's ready to go, hope to pick it up Saturday.

Its going to be a rough weekend of weather here. My splitter is up and running now splitting some 2 year old ash for a friend. Will be installing that stove Saturday night (just in time for the storm)....What a life style I live.
 
Educate me please.....what am I looking at in this picture? Is this from the engine or the cylinder? I'd like to avoid any problems with mine. Thanks...

Fuzzy -

Looks like one of the push rods on the engine itself - think "Old Skool". Not knowing what type of motor is on the splitter, Briggs probably; Kohler MAYBE; Honda Doubtful, the compression was too high (frozen water/ice) and kept either the intake or exhaust; more than likely; valve closed, and was bent on a compression stroke. As a side note - it looks like a newer engine (<500 hours) or a very well maintained one; no build-up on the rod.


Zap - are you doing the work your self, or the shop? Either way, make sure, that you or they, put a new valve cover gasket/"O"-ring type on there also - just to save a leak later on in use.

I'm useless when it comes to a motor so the work is being done by the wood chop shop, I think they did that (gasket) but will check when I pick it up Saturday.

I brought the splitter back today from the wood chop shop, they replaced the push rod that opens and closes the valves plus the gasket/O ring and the breather tube which was weather cracked allowing the water to get in which froze then bent the push rod.

On the way in I picked up some cheap tire chucks for the rhino and a bigger flashlight that can be carried in the glove compartment in the rhino.

The first picture should be of the breather tube they replaced.

Back under the pines its not so bright, just use it for finding something in the back of the rhino. Smokin looks like some rain and ice for us with high winds, are you getting hit yet?

Temps are falling and the winds picking up 15 mph. They say the rain turning over to snow by midnight (not raining yet). It is starting to feel cold enough to snow now. Very calm out this A.M. but the eerie winter storm look is here.


Just check the radar we ar on the very edge of it right now.
