I'm having a Harman pellet stove installed next week. Can folks with experience please advise of a few things:

-Are there any particular brand of pellets that I want to stay away from?

-Can you rate some of the best brands of pellets?

-Is the "Big Heat" brand from Northern Tools a good brand?

-I can get these for 5.69, is that a fair price (if these are ok to use)

There was nothing on the fuel price report for my state or states near me.

Thanks for your expert help!

Where are you in Georgia? I was in Roswell for 4 years and they thought pellets
were an animal care product. So I didn't even install my stove there. :)

That price is > $225/ton which is high, but in GA it may be all that is available.

Ha! I'm in the Dawsonville area.

Thanks, G

check your local TSC see if they carry the "hardwood heat" brand , its packaged for them by a different mill im thinig in Tn or Ky , ive burned them in my stoves with good results. there is also a Pennington plant in madison ga , just outside atlanta you maybe able to buy there cheaper than the retail you quoted which is a bit high but it seems the farther south you go , the more expensive pellets get

Mike, Thank you very much for the info. I'll check with both of them tomorrow.

TSC sells Greenway pellets up in TN so you may see that brand. I burned 10 bags and they seemed ok. My dealer finally got the ton I ordered and they are Country Boy White lightening which seem ok too. I believe they produce less ash than the Greenway. TSC sells the Greenways for 264/ton.

Look up Somersets on their website. Get their number and ask where in Georgia they have been shipping to. Thats how I found mine.

I just got off the phone after calling Lowes stores all the way to Greenville, SC and those that do stock pellets want $5.97 a bag for Greenway, which is $100 a ton MORE than the guys up North are paying for them from Lowes up there! These people are damn crooks. Also, I called Metro House of Fire in Marietta (a long drive for me) and he wanted $6 a bag and no discount for a ton and he didn't even know what brand he had! Also the Tractor Supply in Commerce wants $287 a ton for Greenway's, the only brand they have. Yoder's Hardware in Fair Play, SC wants $4.97 a bag for Carolina Wood Pellets but you pay tax over in SC. Those are the pellets I am burning off now. They truly suck! Pellet length goes from crumbs to OVER 3" long in EVERY BAG. Repeated emails to those people at CWP resulted in not a single reply. I even sent them pictures. My first few tons 2 years ago were Rockwood pellets and they are great! Almost no ash, consistent length, and a lot of heat. Very dense. I get 3 buckets of pellets per bag of them and almost 4 buckets from a bag of CWP so you can see a big difference in density. Looks like I have to buy some more CWP's though because nothing else is around here and EVERYONE who stocks pellets is ready to **** you.
Oh, Rockwood also said they sell pellets to Thomaston Hardware in Thomaston Ga., but not sure where that is.

That's $284 a ton!!!! We are screwed.

maybe corn is cheaper? You can mix it with pellets or you can light on pellets and burn 100% corn if you burn it non stop. Your stove won't automatically ignite corn, though.

Hey Guys,

Thanks to everyone for your valued input. I've been doing some checking too. It seems that the best deal around the Atlanta area is 275.00 plus tax a ton and that is about 80 miles across town and right through the worst of traffic. The high price of the pellets in this area has turned me off of being previously hot (pardon the pun) for a pellet stove I've been looking at. I'm one of those people that can't stand to pay one price for something when someone else up the road is getting the same product for much less. With this in mind, I've totally shifted gears and will likely have a wood insert put in.

Thanks, G

Don't blame you with the way the shysters are treating us down here. You should not have to pay tax on heating fuel in Georgia, I believe. I'm exactly the same way about pricing. If a big chain like Lowes can charge one price in one store, it should be the same in all of them. They have trucks running back and forth constantly and they are ruthless in their dealings with suppliers as I well know.

Nope, corn is scarce down here and I don't have the right SS pipe to handle it. Two stoves using 25' rolls each....... The new pipe would pay for a lot of pellets even at the rate these buggers want for them.
