Hello, I have been reading a lot of information on here for about the last month. Thank you to all. This time I need help. I am currently using a Century wood burning insert that is about 8 years old. Sadly, last night the glass on the door was broken. I have read about the Stove Glass replacement and it will cost roughly $150. We are wanting to wait till next year and buy a pellet stove so I was wondering if I could buy 1/4" steel in place of the window and use the glass gasket and clips to attach it instead of buying the robax glass? Sorry if this sounds silly, but we want to put a pellet stove in center of house instead of the insert which is on the far end of our house.

Thank you.

Sounds like a good idea, the pellet stove int he middle of the house. but im curious to what you what you will do with the insert afterward? just convert back to a fireplace, have all the pellet sotve heat sucked out of the house when you want a romantic fire? I figure if you dont want to have the insert for the heat aspect, you can always keep it around for some ambiance as well as additional heat should you want or find out the pellets isnt enough etc. replacing glass may not be fun but it would look better.

just my thoughts

I have had tons of people do the steel plate thing. I'm sure it violates code, warranty, etc, but between you and I, I would do it if I knew it was just going to be for a year. Make sure whatever you do, you test it for being air tight. Put something leaky in there and you can end up with the Johnny Danger situation.

Thanks for the replies. Im looking for a less expensive fix for now. It will take 2-3 weeks for the glass to come in or about 1 to 1 1/2 weeks to get the pellet stove. Also a day or so to install. We will eventually be taking the fire place out of the family room. The brick and clay liner need to be rebuilt. I use stainless liner for my insert. We just didnt want to spend the money on a pellet stove till next year. I also still have a rick and half of wood sitting out back.

Thanks.

Check with these folks for the glass. They can have it to you in a couple days for a lot less bucks. Then when you sell the stove it will bring a better price and you get the nice fireview in the meantime.
