I would like to collect information about pleasantly smelling pellets - this seems a topic not much discussed so far (compared to heat output anyway). I am just in the middle of testing different brands and today was very surprised to find Natures Heat having a very pleasant smell - reminds me of Sauna...I mean the msell during burning, the pellets themselves were rather neutral.

Does anyone else have experience with positive odors from pellets ? And does anyone know what actually causes the smell(s) ?

Interesting question.

I've never noticed an odor from pellets except for a very nutral one when opening a bag. Even when the hopper warms up there has never been a noticable ordor from them and that has been the case of all brands of pellets I've used.

The only time I smell them is when I'm outside near the exhaust pipe and then there is a very plesant odor.

So I'm not sure what you mean.

It smells right out of the heat exchanger, I am assuming there is a small leak to the fire room somewhere around the heat exchanger tubes. I had a couple of brands so far and noticed nothing , but the Natures Heat are pleasant...was just surprised about it and wondering if it is the wood they are made of or an intentional additive ? Would that be an interesting marketing ?

I cant smell them while burning but as far as pellet smell I have to say Oakies a wonderful smell, when I do use them I leave a bag open just to have the aroma fill the house !!!

I must have a sensitive nose, I can't stand the smell of Okies, too pungent. I like the NEWP's smell better, or lack there of...

My pellets are odorless, I have never noticed any smell from them at all. I just put them in the hopper and burn them.

Um, as long as they smell like wood I don't really care. I noticed an odd smell when I first restacked my pallet of Eagle Valleys, but don't anymore, so it must have been the smell of the stretch wrap around the bottom of the pallet.

Corinth pellets I got last year stunk up my cellar pretty bed. Didn't get rid of the smell until June or so after the windows had been open for a month or so. The MWP have a real nice, woodsy smell. The Maine Choice seem pretty neutral.

I burned ocky Mountain Pellets. They smelled great.

Okanagans smell nice in the basement where they are stored and screened.

Oakies definitely have an aroma. I could never decide whether it was good or bad. I can see why some people wouldn't like it.

I wouldn't say the smell is good or bad, but when I walk into the house it isn't what I would call pleasant. First thing I think is, what is that smell?!?!

The best smelling pellets I have used are Natural Glows. They are a locally produced pellet so they are made with a percentage of ponderosa and lodgepole pine. They definitely have a nice "piney" smell when you open the bag, and especially when they have been sitting in the hooper long enough to get warm. Bear Mt pellets have a slight Doug' Fir/Cedar smell to them, but it is barely noticeable.

We've been buring American Wood Fibers (AWF) in our new stove. They have a good smell.

No smell in the house unless I shuffle up the bags on the pallets.

Some have a stronger wood smell than others, but I have run into some
in the past that smelled like melted crayons...bleck!

Just started burning the 2 bags of Okies I got from Jay last spring. It was pretty cold (6 degrees) last night, and decided to put them to the test. I DID notice the funky pine/spruce odor as soon as I opened the bag, but they burn great! Turned the stove down a notch after about 2 hours.

If I could get them near me at any decent price, I wouldn't care what they smelled like....they are a good burning pellet, for sure.

They ARE very short pellets though....may have something to do with the heat output....there are a lot of pieces in each auger turn.

Remember the Appling County Pellets? Every time I brought a bag into the house it smelled like the dog took a dump in the living room. They smelled like manure.

In my experience, the softwoods tend to have a a more pleasant odor. I am burning some cleanfire pacifics right now and the Mrs. likes me to keep the bin full because they smell so nice. Aroma pellets........sounds appealing. Let me know if anyone finds some chocolate ones.

We’ve been burning Greenway's in our stove, they burn great in our Lopi Yankee.

They have a nice fresh cut OAK smell when a bag is opened and dumped into the hopper.

Hey Pete, if you find them locally at a good price, please hit me up. Thanks again for putting me onto the Chows, great find.

Mine smell great. Gust of wind that create back pressure on the stove cause a little to leak inside. Fine pine smell, just like the old campfire. And an extra bonus, when I run out of granola, a hand full can last me all day.

You shouldn't be smelling them burn INSIDE your house. If you are, you have a leak somewhere and I hope you have good CO detectors!

I don't smell ANYTHING with my new Lopi Pioneer.

See my previous post on the Whitfield Profile 20 where I had a crack in the fire box. Not good.

The NEWP's I burnt this year had a nice wood smell to them. I am burning some okies right now and they have a pungent odor to them. Don't really care for the okies smell and dust. The Hamers I have I don't smell at all. You would think pellets should just smell like wood but who knows what else might be in the mix.

I had been burning Okies and didn't really notice anything particular about the smell. Once someone complained about it on here last year I gave them a strong sniff check in the warm hopper.
I guess I'd classify it as a wood/earthy smell. Not disagreeable at all. Sort of a comforting smell.

The last week or so I have been burning Vermonts.

They are a pine pellet and that pine smell is instantly noticeable.
I am a wood worker and love that pine smell.

I have been burning Okies and Vermonts this season and love them both.

As far as smell is concerned, I never really noticed a difference until I put 5 bags in the back of my wife's car to trade with a friend. I don;t know if it was just the bags, but they gave off a pretty nasty odor that I didn;t experience while I was loading the nearly 4 tons into my basement....

A little later that week, I put 10 bags of Vermonts in the back of my suburban and the smell was great, almost intoxicating. I didn't think anything more of it until I saw my wife around the back of the house. She liked the smell of the Vermont's exhaust!

I like them both equally, they are both super-excellent and clean pellets. Either way, I'm going to keep using Okies primarily as for some reason I can get them cheaper from British Columbia than I can get the Vermonts from 150 miles away....
