hey everyone i have a question about wood burning inserts. i have seen where people install them without the surrounds, if i were to do this is there any reason i could not install the insert further back in my fireplace? my situation specifically is that i am interested in the stoves like the lopi revere and 1750 republic, perfect size for my house (i think anyway) the only problem is that they are supposed to stick out like 10" from the fireplace which really doesnt work for my hearth, which only extends 14" out from the fireplace. i know i will need additional hearth protection no matter what stove i get, but i would really prefer less of a footprint. so could i install these stoves maybe 4 or 5 inches further back in the firplace?

they make a flush mount surround, if thats what u r goin for... imho, though, the more stove sticking out = more radiant heat into the room and not absorbed by the masonry.

lopi makes flush kits for the revere and the republic inserts? or do you mean other stoves? i have seen other stoves that mount flush but they seem to be either very small stoves or too large for my fireplace, i havent seen any flush or close to flush stoves in the 2-2.5 cubic foot firebox sizes, the jotul c450 is the closest but that still sticks out over 8 inches. the republic 1750 is the right size and the right price, and lopi seems to have a great reputation so i was hoping i could makes that stove work.

every bit of stove stuffed into that hole is not heating your house..

Hi All,

I'd like to resurrect this thread, as I have the same issue as krex. My firebox is 23.5 h x 28 w and very deep. My problem is that my lintel is very wide - 15". This is problematic for all inserts that I have seen so far.. I would never be able to connect up the liner to the insert due to the width of the lintel.

I currently have a Jotul F100 installed in the fireplace, rear outlet and it's working fine.. I would just like a bit of a larger firebox, and the option of having a blower.

If I installed the Lopi 1750, it looks like I'd be able to clear my 15" lintel by pushing the insert flush into the firebox. I would have still 4" of top clearance and 2" on either side of the stove. The fireplace is fieldstone, and it has grates built into its sides which allow for some great convective heating. The Jotul is installed flush and works well, but as I mentioned, has a very small firebox and no blower option.

Outside of some efficiency loss due to it being mounted flush, does anyone see any other issues with installing the unit flush (no 10" hearth extension)?

Thanks for any opinions!
Scott

Not really sure about the setup of that stove but if you mount a stove deeper that it was designed and it has a jacketed body and a convection chamber then the outlet for the convection chamber or blower vents might be buried back in your fireplace. This would be an issue because any airflow coming from convection or the blowers will not have a direct outlet out of your fireplace, all that heat will get dumped out of the stove behind the surround. If you are looking at a convective stove then you really really need that airflow because the jacket around the stove hinders radiant heat and if you are looking at a stove designed for more radiant heat then you will be radiating all your heat behind the surround. I would advise getting a stove that fits your fireplace properly there are so many out there i think you will find one that can be installed as designed.
