The dealer I get my pellets from has the following brands.
Hamer, Turmans, Allegheny, and Pennwood pellets. I am burning Hamer's this year and was wondering how the others compare. I will need another ton yet this year.

I buy softwood pellets 99% of the time,This year as last Spruce Pointe and Vermont super softwood.

from what you dealer offers, Hamer. Why? because I read that they were good on the internet...and the internet never lies

Hammers for me! But it all depends on what pellet burns the hottest in your stove.

Like people always say, buy a couple bags if possible before buying a ton. That said, I have burned Hamers, Okies, Vermont, Barefoot, NEWPs and Turman. My stove definitely likes Turmans the best. The heat was good for all those pellets, but I have the lowest ash with Turmans.

If ya like the Hamers, why switch?
I have never seen them around my area, but they seem to have a good rep here.

If you can, always try out a couple bags of a new brand before buying in bulk.
One may love a brand while someone else may hate em.

I have burned a few different kinds and the best for me in my harman have been the softwoods LG'S and I have 3 ton of the currans from massena ny this year and so far so good dont think they are quite like the LG'S but they are close burn clean,on the hardwood front I have burned empires which are made locally here some appling county and I had pretty good luck with them but cant get them around here anymore,Instant heats burned ok also .The worst I ever burned was Meader brothers pellets hot but terrible dirty clog up the stove horrible pellets would not buy them even if they were 50.00 a ton.I get alot of weird looks when i say the softwoods burn great but we have a hardwood stigma up here!!!!!!

Your Mt Vernon AE has enough adjustment to burn any pellet as long as your willing to play. Any one of these(Hamer, Turmans, Allegheny) did real well for me! I can't comment on the Pennwood as I haven't tried them yet.

Hamer are very dense small sized pellets that get the stove to crank the heat at a lower feed rate. Turmans have been a very stable pellet for me. They are 100% Oak and also burn hot and clean. Allegheny I was very surprised with, Just wished I could get more. As with any pellet I recommend please be sure to try them first.

What about the cost of them? Its a big factor on what I choose to put in my hopper.

Thanks J, I am thinking I am going to go out and buy 2 bags each of the Allegheny and Turmans to try them. If they burn similar to the Hamers, I will buy whatever is the cheapest. I believe Hamer are the most expensive.

Good idea.

IMO, if the price's are about the same, after the Hamer's, I'd go to the Turmans, and then the Allegheny.

Bought two bags each of Allegheny and Turmans. The Allegheny burned nice but I also developed a clinker with them that stuck to the sides of my AE's pot and did not drop out just like the Hamer's. I am burning the Turmans now and they are nice and hot and so far very clean. I also get a real nice flame with them. They are all selling for $4.60 a bag as are the Hamer's. So far I am thinking I will be buying Turman's next year.

Where are you getting the Turmans from? I would like to try those.

I buy Blazers, WOW Pellets, Home depot sells them, burn hot and little ash. I've found that these work the best for me.

I am getting them at Kegereis stoves in Bernville on route 183 south of I78, they have all these brands there.

Shoot!!!!....just a bit too far for me......thanks for the info though!

Blazers because they are only $5 a bag at Home Depot and the Lignetics at our local store are $7.99 a bag. Blazer's quality this year does seem to be down a bit though as they are not producing as much heat as I remember.

I just bought a ton of blazers today.Never burned them, hope there good.$187.00 at the Coeur d'Alene home depot.

I just bought 20 bags of Presto Logs at $3.70 at my local Lowes. They burn pretty well on my Breckwell P22.

You know for the past six weeks that we have had our stove. All I have used and liked are Lignetics (except for the crap Penningtons I bought for Thanksgiving emergency). Loved them and the price I was getting locally @ 199. ton. Six weeks and burned 1 1/2 tons.
Today I was at Home Depot and picked up a ton of Stove Chow and and cannot even begin to describe the difference! I will never bash Lignetics, they burned great for me in every way. But the heat output from the Stove Chow is way better then the Lignetics. Enough that I had to re adjust my stove settings, what was normally 74* (this time 11pm) is 80* now. It is roasting in here!

You mean there are other pellets out there other than "UNCLE JED'S COLD REMEDY" huh??? Uncle Jed's are all I use for the last three years. They are a Douglas Fir premium softwood pellet, and are consistantly clean, and hot burning from year to year... not like all the other company's with thier good this year, and not the next crap. Best part is I only pay 229 a ton.

I hear peeps in the west get them for far less than $229/ton! %-P hehe

I have a habit of trying different types of pellets just to see if I am missing anything........I am a tried and true Bear Mountain Fan but I am do like the try others. I recently tried Okanagon pellets after hearing good things about them. They burned just fine.....as good as Bear Mountain from my point of view, but i noticed that when i poured the bag of OKIES into the stove hopper, I got a huge cloud of pellet dust that settled all over the stove and floor and like a light dusting of snow and needed to be cleaned up. I didnt get any clinkers....and about the same amount of ash as the BM. So, other than the dust......the OKIES are ok in my book. I am in Seattle area where, if i shop around in the summer, I can get BM for 199/ton and OKIES for 185/ton. Ill go with the BM as the long as the price is close to OKIES. If BM becomes to proud of there pellets and theres a 50/ton difference, Ill buy OKIES and deal with the dust!

Keep in mind it's been a LOT warmer the past few days then it was just a few weeks ago for this area.
