I was hoping that I could counter the "home depot sucks" thread with a thread of my own about scoring a Makita 6401 rental saw. Well, I can still brag about scoring the saw, but HD sucks...

Well, for some reason they want $221 vs the $205 the rental saws normally sell for... ah... ok... not going to complain about $16.... The saw looks pretty good, and it has a brand new Carlton chain on it, not some no-name Chinese chain. Saw looked like it was maintained very well by them. $221 was still a pretty good deal.

I ask them about the tool-kit for the saw.

Me: Do you have the tool-kit that came with it when it was new?
Them:No

Then before I left:
Me: Could you maybe check and see if you have a tool-kit laying around? I'd really like to have the tool-kit for it
Them:We don't have any, we throw them away as soon as we get a new saw in.
Me, with confused look on my face: Uh.... well, do you think maybe next time you get a new saw in you can hold the tool-kit and give me a phone-call? I'd really like to have the tool-kit for the saw.
Them: Uh, oh... I guess, then they just stand there....
Me: Would you like my number?
Them: Oh, yeah, here, write it on this business card.
Me: Ok


How much you want to bet that card went in the trash and I never get a phone-call? I know it's not a huge deal, but dang it'd be nice to have the stinking tool-kit for the saw. They had a brand new manual for it, why do they throw the tool-kit away and keep the manual in brand new condition?

It just doesn't make sense to me....

Guess I'll just bug them every few weeks to see if they got any new saws in yet.

Does anybody know if they get a new saw for each old saw they sell?
 
Oh yea as soon as you turned away , your number in the can.

They will probably try to make you pay for it if you do have any luck with them.
 
No, they won't call you but the tool kit is nothing you can't make up for yourself. It is nothing special.

that 19 watt flourescent light bulb in the bathroom doesn't support reading materials.



HD in town is really bad.
If I go ( and I do) to the one two towns away that store is a little bigger and just about everyone there behaves like a film crew is following everyone around filming for the next Home Depot ad. Amazingly helpful and courteous.
 
Do you really need the 'tool kit'? Isn't it just the standard socket and screwdriver tool? Don't you have a socket and screw driver?
 
You could have went to the local mom and pop chain saw place, spent more money and got much better service. Sometimes you eat steak at a diner, sometimes at a 5 star steak house...whats the difference? Its all dead cow meat anyhow.

No, they didn't promise me anything. But it was just one of those moments where you have to think to yourself, "Why? What is the purpose in doing that? That is awefully stupid".

$600? Naw, maybe $500, but even then, IIRC Baileys sells the 6401 for $475 on sale with free shipping. So I basically got an "OK" saw (it is far from excellent, it's been rented 95 times in 2 years) for half of a new one.

No, the tool kit is 4 pieces, quoted below from the manual. It would just be nice to have it so I don't have to dig out a wrench for the bar-nuts. A stand wrench won't work so I have to use a ratchet and socket. I'd rather just have the combi-wrench that comes with it.

5 Universal wrench
6 Wrench
7 Screw driver for carburetor adjustment
8 Cylinder fin cleaner
 
The T27 wrench that comes in any new saw kit is woefully inadequate. Buy a T handle from Bailey's.
 
I can't ever find one of those danged saws. I want one. don't need more tools, but what's a "fin cleaning tool" or whatever it's called?

Call them and bug them all the time. I've been doing it for 5 months now and finally got one. Their list normally comes out between the 1st and 15th of each month, so just call them and ask if they have the new list. Ask if there is a saw on it.

I live an hour away from the nearest HD. But the one that had the saw was on my was home for Christmas so I called them a couple weeks ago and they had one. I took my chances and waited until we went home for Christmas and they still had it. Called before we left and had them hold it for me.
 
Home Depot is in my opinion one of the better stores.If you or I had a problem with a piece of equipment they will generally make good on it. You have a lot of nerve asking for a tool kit for what you payed for the saw.I just purchased a new drill, and showed the cashier my veterans ID card and received an additional 10% off my purchase. Maybe they should charge an additional fee on the saws, then you would complain about the higher cost.I would just spend the $$ and get the tools required, Ken

I'm a veteran but I don't have a veterans ID card. Or are you retired military? What is a veterans ID card?
 
Cal, A Veteran ID card is exactly what it says it is.I would check with a local veterans center and they will be more than happy to assist you. Being a veteran I get all my injections free.Same for my hearing disability.Also Home Depot and Lowe's as well as some Walmarts give a discount to the veterans, I should mention that I have a hearing disability from my military service, Ken

I never blame the store,
it is usually the employees.
Talk to the manager if you ever have any issues &/or write the
customer service on line.

As we all know, the employees can go the extra mile, if they want to.
The HD & Lowes here, I find Lowes has friendlier helpful employees & I've learned
which employees a HD to talk to get assistance.

All stores want their employees to be good at customer service, some just aren't.
You get what you pay for.

When you find one who is doing a good job, get their name & write to the company &
give them a "atta-boy". Helps keep them around & gives you a good feeling too.

Are you saying that I was out of line to ask for a tool kit? A kit that should come with the saw? 95% of HD's include the tool-kit when they sell the saws, why was I out of line to ask for it?

So if you got a good deal on a used car, but it came without a radio and spare tire, would you at least ask if the seller had those items? I would, because if the seller had those items most likely he'd throw them in, and then you wouldn't have to go out and buy them....

I'm sorry, but I just don't see how I could be out of line here.

My entire point was just that they throw them away rather than keep them around, which, IMHO, there is absolutely no reason to do that.
 
CB,All that I was saying is that it would be nice if the saw came with the tool kit.But for what you payed for the saw you should be thankful.Yes I agree with you that the kit should be included. The store more than likely has a box full of them laying around someplace.It would more than likely take an employee several hours to locate one.The next time you are at the store I would simply ask a customer service representative who assembles the saws and ask to speak to them. More than likely they will assist you in your quandary, Ken
 
Never hurts to ask. You'd be suprised what you get sometimes , just for asking.
