heyyo folks,
while im asking potentially silly questions...

so my IR gun is reading the insert at 600. the blower (on low) is still going on and off intermittently- even while the IR gun reads that the insert is stll at 600. so shouldnt the blower- theoretically continue to run until the temp is below the automatic turn on? perhaps my ir gun, being not the finest on the market by any means, is not accurate? perhaps i should just relax and let the insert do its thing? bwaaa!

the "automatic" turn on that you are referring to is a thermostat. most will trigger the blower on near 110* and shut off near 90*. perhaps you thermostat is going bad. i guess i really dont know how to tell if it is bad but if your stove is reading 600* and the blower turns off, "Here's ur sign!!!" good luck, maybe others can tell you how to test the thermostat......

If this with a small fire and the stove still warming up, that may be normal. The fan thermostatic (snap) switch is located low and only comes on once the stove body has warmed up. If the stove has been running for awhile and the blower still only runs intermittently, the snap switch may need to make better contact with the stove body. On your stove I think this requires removing the back panel (4 screws?) to access the switch. It should firmly contact the stove body. If that fails to remedy the problem, the snap switch may need replacing. Fortunately this is usually an inexpensive and easy to get part. On a new stove it should be under warranty.

thanks for the input...

i wonder that something is either wrong with the thermostat then, or my IR gun is wonky? or, more likelyim just not pointing the thing in the correct area... smack in the middle of the window? bah!

Measure the temperature on the top center of the stove or above the left of right corner of the door.

PS: can you add your insert model to your signature line for easy ID? I was thinking a freestanding 1400 and not the insert. The heat sensor for the 1402 is
located on the right hand side of the unit.

I hope she was as short as him

I have the same stove.

Usually the blower on my unit kicks on around 300 or so using the IR gun on the metal plate. I've seen it get up to 600 before it turned on but that's when I had a blazing fire going in a cold stove. I think it took a while for the body of the stove to heat up to match the temperature of the top metal plate.

Once the blower kicks on, it will run the entire cycle and wont turn off until the temp of the stove gets to about 200.

Keep checking the metal plate with your IR gun and if the temps are consistently at 600 before the blower turns on and then continues to cycle on and off at those high temps, I think your thermostat might be bad.

this is my first time since i got the thing that ive had time to really do extended burning, so i think you are right partybob, i think it was just a cold stove thing- tonight, after refilling with an already hot stove it didnt seem to be an issue, so hopefully ive got a hang on it... though i'll keep a watchful eye if it starts up again-

thanks folks!

I am with Partybob, once my stove is running my blower never turns off until the stove has cooled below 200 on the surface thermometer. I have had a few mornings that I go to the stove and it is all hot ash from the night before, blower has switched off but when I stir the coals to get a good bed for reload it heats the stove enough to turn the blower back on! I am almost positive that the snap switch is on the right side of the stove under the cover that comes off.

I have a smaller version of the same stove, which I think has the same fan as the 1402, but the 1402 has 2 fans and mine has 1. I use the fan much differently than you do. I keep it off until I want it on, then turn it on manually. Then turn it off when until I want it on again. I have no idea if the heat sensor thing works or not. I like turning it on and off a needed. It never turns off automatically when I use it this way. Maybe it's not functioning correctly, but it's actually the way I prefer it. Do you ever adjust the fan speed?

I heat a lot with wood, having said that I use the blower pretty much whenever my stove is running. I have had inserts in the past without the automatic snap switch and have come home to a blower running and blowing cold air from inside the fireplace area. I like the blower to get max heat output from my stove and I really like the idea of not having to worry about ice cold air being blown around when the fire goes out!
