After lurking on the site for a year or so.... I am finally making the plunge. I know, I know ... it took me long enough. I appreciate all of the great information you guys provide.

Masonary fireplace with the following opening 37w x 31h x 22-1/2d and level with the floor. I have a couple of questions.

1. Height is 31" and Jotul standard cast iron surround is 31-5/8. Do I need the purchase the optional surround? I have plenty of room to add the optional surround. Is 5/8" enough overlap?
2. Do I need to purchase the SST liner pipe? Flue is 13 x 13
3. What other items do I need and am I missing anything?
4. Is this a fair price?
Jotul Rockland with Standard Surround - Matte Black Paint - $3089
22 FT of SST liner Pipe $594
Installation $450
Tax $309.98
Total $4442.98

If the fireplace face is made from brick or flush stone you should be fine, but if it is like mine and natural stone without a flush edge you might see gaps where the stove surround does not full cover the sides and sits about 1/2 inch proud of the most inner point of the face of the fireplace. Due to this, I added bluestone and motar on each side to hide the gaps. If your flush, you should be fine. Installing without a an insulated liner? I was 50-50 on this but I went with the insulation, especially since it comes with an Uncle Sam 30% discount. Price could be better as I got the 550 in brown enamel for 2999, (400 less if in traditional black). Please see the link in my signature for my total cost breakdown.

I would definitely line the chimney and install a block off plate at the damper. Price sounds about $500 high. I know Jotul is distributed from Maine so prices might be slightly lower on the east coast, but $500 is too much for freight. That price is high.

jmpjr,
Back in May I bought the same insert and paid just about what you paid including the extended surround for which I was charged $125. The cost of the stove itself in matte black was $2400 with a 20% discount at the time. With the liner, installation, and extended surround it came out close to $4400. I did a lot of shopping around and eventually realized that saving a couple bucks wasn't worth going to an out of town dealer. If there were problems I'd have to deal with someone 60-75 miles away rather than 5 miles away.
I wouldn't think there'd be much in the way of discounts at this time of year. Spring seems to be the optimal time for specials.

Best of luck.

If you can pay for it all and show receipts for December you should be able to claim for the tax credit and get 30% back (up to a certain cost), if you were intending to do try for the tax refund.
Last year we ordered and paid for our liner online on Christmas eve, and we got the stove on I think the last day of December, and I prepaid my handyman installer, so we got it all in under the wire for 2009 and were rolling a couple weeks into 2010, you are so close that you may be able to squeak it in.

JMPJR, I bought from the dealer in Avon, CT on 11/23/10 and here is a summary of the receipt:

$3,297.00 - C550 Blue Black with standard blower and surround

$918.54 - 6" x 35" Metal-Fab SS Liner Kit w/o tee
Simpson Dura-Vent 6" x 90 degree Ventinox VFT SS elbow
Simpson Dura-Vent 6" Ventinox Liner Sleeve Adapter
Rutland Magnetic Stove Pipe Thermometer

$775.00 - Installation

$252.93 - Tax

$5,243.47 - Total

I am now thinking I paid too much???
