Hi everyone- I just had a Harman P35i installed..I live in central mass/metro west...I have read the installation manual, a few times..just curious..

I have a few questions .

1. the manual mentions a Draft test procedure - this was not performed. ( I am not using an OAK)

2. Minor cosmetic note: the main door has a small divet in the lower left corner.

5. Is anyone else seeing this:The Control Panel door has the labels on upside down, or it was installed incorrectly, The notch to open the door is on the top and the hinge is on the Let side. The manual shows the opposite, hinge on Right side and notch on top..However, the cut-outs on the door that engage the hinge , do not appear to go any other way, perhaps a manufacturer defect?

6. I am feeling a good draft when I put my hands near the stove, almost as if the flu was open. Should I be feeling this? Is there any reason to omit the sealing plate in the damper?

If I had to do it again, I would have installed it myself..

Thank you for reading,

1. I didn't test draft. Not to say you should. Mine works fine.

2. Yep. There's 4 dimples around the outside of the door. They are the drill points for the optional trim kit.

5. Control panel was tricky. It took me a while to figure out. I do believe the diagram on the directions was wrong. Keep rotating and flopping over until you get it right. It can be done! You'll need a rivet gun. Oh I remember now. The finger access hole had to go on top. The picture (and the ideal way) would be to have the finger on the bottom.

6. I'm not sure what your asking, or what type of venting configuration you have.

Agree w/ Mike... I have an answer to #6... yes: there should be a block off of some sort up there, preferably with some insulation on top of metal. They probably didn't do one. Some unfaced fiberglass insy will work, since you'll have the surround off anyway...

Is there a plate on top of the flue that closes the flue off? we use a collar plate that seals the top of the flue that the pipe exits out of and this eliminates the drafts

Thank you everyone for your input...

Some answers-

regarding the control panel, the diagram shows it upside down (with notch on bottom). This was installed properly, the person installing the safety labels was upside down, but they are easier for me to read standing up :)

The installers seal the top of the chimney , where the liner comes out, so there is currently no seal plate where the damper once was,,,I will have to research and add one...

As far as the draft, that may be lessened with a damper seal plate, however the chimney is on the outside of the house...and I may just be feeling cold air permeating the fireplace..

In my last house I was able to air seal the fireplace doors with insulation. That cut down the drafts tremendously...

Has anyone had experience air sealing pellet inserts ? I am not using OAK, so there are probably limits...

Thank you again,

Hi,

I have a P35i that I installed myself. I had many of the same questions, especially about the damper sealing plate. After reading that section several times and asking my dealer about how best to seal my damper opening, here's what I did. I determined that a metal damper plate was not necessary for my installation and I simply bought a small roll of unfaced R19 fiberglass insulation from Home Depot and cut a piece that fit nicely in the damper opening and gently pushed it up into the opening and around my chimney liner to seal it off and prevent the draft from any cold air in the chimney.

I had to completely remove my fireplace damper to allow my 4" chimney liner to fit through the opening. I ran a liner from the top of the chimney to the stove, and sealed it to the stove with high temp silicone (red). I put a layer of fiberglass insulation at the top of the chimney about a foot down into the terracotta, then installed the chimney cap. Then I put fiberglass insulation in the damper opening around the liner where the damper plate used to be. This method helps to create a dead air space in the chimney that will prevent any condesation from forming and dripping down onto the back of the stove.

Here's a link to another post of mine, which has some pictures...

Read my above post completely and it will answer many of your questions.

Hope that helps...

I just got my first P35I. I have it out of the box just sitting on the show room floor. It is a very nice looking unit, not an Accentra but a nice unit. Much better looking than some of the other brands I use to sell.
