I'm thinking of getting this electric saw just to cut down a few splits from time-to-time. Want electric for ease of use and can use it in my garage anytime. Although the Makita is pricey, it looks good to me because: Makita is generally a good brand, good safety features, ease of maintenance. The comparable Stihl seems to be ~$100 more. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

It is a real nice saw. I have the same saw in orange and black and I love it. I had mine converted to a rim system so I could run larger sprockets on it to get the chain speed up. It has loads of torque, and with the stock 6-tooth sprocket it will cut through anything it's 16" bar will encounter, albeit at a much slower rate than a gas saw will. Make sure you run it with a 12 ga. extension cord if you're using it for trim work around your property.
