I have just taken delivery of a new P61A after trying a PC 45 for 3 weeks. That's a whole story for another day.....

When in Room Temp mode at a set temp, the stove will start automatically and run for several minutes, 15, 20, 30, whatever. Instead of throttling back and maintaining the temp, the stove shuts off every time. Is this normal? It seems that premature igniter failure is in my future. Appreciate any thoughts.

I assume you've been running it the past couple days and it's been pretty warm. It is supposed to shut off when it has reached temperature. It won't take much to do that with the warm weather. When the weather gets colder in the next day or 2, I think you'll find it won't be cycling off and on so much. You might want to try stove temp mode. I have it in auto ignition, and it won't shut down unless it runs out of pellets. Will save your igniter. If it's in manual ignition, the temperature dial has to be at least 5, or the distribution fan won't operate. It just takes some fiddling with the dial since it's not reading the temperature of the room.

If using room temp. auto you may want to move your room temp probe. Or after the next startup move the auto/man switch to man and see if the unit goes into idle mode and maintains a flame until the next time the room temp. prob calls for heat.

In stove temp mode, I have found that it doesn't throttle back enough to stop heating up the space in these mild temps. I have been told that in stove temp mode the numbers 1-7 mean lbs of pellets per hour that the stove burns. Thats a bunch of crap since I can't get a bag to last 24hours even with it set on setting 1 and the feed rate on 3.

Since I never had these issues with my Harman Invincible, I guess I'm just impatient with it. Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, stove temp is definitely for the colder days. I had the same problem with the room being too hot, but since my igniter kicked the bucket I have no choice.

newflover I'm interested in how old your p68's is? Mines fall of07 and I went through , no joke, 3 igniters in just 3 years the whole time running on room temp I was told on my last one that it was a new and improved igniter made by Harman a little beefier I don't know if thats true, but I can tell you that it's now lasted longer than any other igniter I've had in my unit. Also interested in how much fur your pulling from out behind your stove with your newfoundland I've got myself a big old mountain dog and she sure does send alot of fur back there.

My stove was installed Dec. 2008. I run the stove on room temp and it's the original igniter. Had a little problem with it not lighting earlier this winter, then it was fine. I cleaned it a week ago, and the igniter didn't work after that. I couldn't find anything loose, and I re-cleaned and tried a couple more times, but nothing. Believe it or not, there is very little, if any, fur that gets behind my stove. We brush her every day, and she goes to the groomer regularly. Plus, she hates the stove because it makes things too hot and stays on the other side of the room. My sister's German Shepherd sheds way more than our Newfie!
