Sorry for being lazy and not searching previous threads. I know the technology for thermometers is a rapidly changing landscape, but I am looking for a thermometer that I can attach to the door of my cast iron insert. I use a laser therm but I don't trust it. Cost is no object! LoL at myself. Any or all suggestions will be taken seriously except for the usual array of mercury, veterinary or rectal therms that some may have used.

Are you serious? I use my Raytek laser infrared as the standard here.. It is much more accurate and responsive than just about anything out there.. Used on a black or dark surface they are dead nuts accurate...

My skepticism may not be based in reality. For example with the IR, the temp along the top of the insert door can vary by 150 degrees from the center (400) of the door to the edge (250). In addition, when I hold the trigger down the temps bounce around like a basketball. Is this normal for these devices?

My Raytek does not fluctuate like yours does.. It is very stable.. Keep it about a foot away ) or maybe a little bit more) and it will sample a larger area.. What brand IR gun do you use?

You learn something new everyday! I guess my checking the temp with the laser from across the room is not as accurate nor as stable as one foot away. The temp does not jump around more than 10 degrees. I will stop calling this thing a piece of junk. By the way it's a Mastercraft IR thermometer (Canadian Tire). Thats as specific as I can get.
Thank you for the tip Ray!
Any suggestions on a magnetic thermometer? I am looking for something that heavily hints "This is the temperature that you cauterized your hand at when you touched the door.!"

I think your IR scanner has a spot ratio of 8:1 which I believe means it measures a 1" spot at a distance of 8" but I could be wrong.. As for magnetic temp gauges most prefer Condar or Rutland ...

I trust my cheap Harbor Freight thermometer . . . but then again it's not like I'm using it to regulate the temps in a nuclear power plant or anything . . . as for magnetic thermometers . . . I like Condars.
