Hello everyone,
I currently have a birck fireplace 27 1/2 width , 22 height , 28 depth ( approx) used it for the first time last winter, doesn't heat much, nice ambiance , and smoked up the house a few times, and oh yeah wife hates it (smell/smoke) . Its in my basement with 1 family room approx 400 sq ft. main floor is 5 1/2 rooms (duplex).I was thinking about maybe getting a wood stove insert in the near future . I currently use electic heating system as a primary source and would like to have a secondary heating system while investing in a stove insert. I was at a local stove / fireplace dealer who sells gas/wood/pellets . He recommends me getting a wood pellet stove insert for my application. I would like a stove to be low on maintance , seeing as no one is home during the day, but at the same time would like to use it to heat during the cold winter months here in Canada. Now I have heard many opinions from friends and co-workers but, I must say that the options out there, and manufactures are never ending !!! I have searched on the net , and have gathered alot of info,,, but the question still remains the same as in what type and sort should I get?

For your info the local dealer quoted me on a wood pellet stove... Enviro Milan $3991 + taxes (includes installation and piping )

Moved this over to the pellet forum for a more direct answer.

Welcome turbofrank! Think you are on the right track and seem to be doing your homework. I am not a insert user but there are plenty here that will chime in soon to help you ! Again welcome! ;-)

I installed a Milan pellet insert in my fireplace in December and have been quite happy with it. Other popular brands are Harman and Quadrafire.

I recommend double checking your fireplace dimensions against those of the stove. The Milan manual states the max width of the insert is 27-7/8, slightly bigger than what you stated above. The height and depth look ok.

We're not using it to heat the house. Instead, we run it a few hours in the evenings and on weekends. It easily warms our family room and kitchen. I have found it easy to clean. So far this has just been vacuuming of ash and wiping of the glass.

Something I learned recently is that the newer Milan is the "A" model, mine is not. The new model has an updated control panel which gives you trim control over the combustion blower and feed rate. That would be nice to have.

Here is a link to my earlier post about my install.

Hi Ned,
By the way , very nice install. I am still searching around the net for reviews and info regarding pellet stoves and if there really is a saving to be made in electricty bill. I am stuck between a wood burning stove insert or a pellet stove insert . How many sq ft is the main room ? Please keep me informed on your new Milan . Thanks .

Just to heat our small 1,100 sq. ft. house the electric bill in the windter would be well over 500.00 / month, with the pellet stove it's ~ 125.00 There is a huge savings over electric heat.

Turbo,

My main room (family room open to kitchen) is about 500 square feet. The fireplace is at the far end of the space / house. It easily warms that area, but getting much past that is a stretch due to the layout of the house. We'd be baked out of the main room, and would need more fans to circulate the air. It's just not practical.

So location of the insert is a factor. If you have zoned heating, that would would help too. So even if you can't get the heat from the stove to the far reaches, you'd still be covered by the electric heat. If I had my upstairs on a zone, I'm sure we could heat the downstairs with the pellet.

I can't help with your choice between pellet or wood. I'm sure there are pros / cons to both. For me, I wanted the instant on fire without having to stock and load firewood.

Good luck in your search!

Ned

Turbo, you must have a good selection of pellet brands there I would think, since Quebec is a manufacturer. You should shop around to see the best deal vs. quality for pellets that are available to you. Like a previous post said about the power bill, but I know that your power rates are really low there and don't contribute to pellet usage. We here in N.B. ,at xmas our power bill was around 100 bucks for 1400 sq. feet and we run 24/7 if the nitetime is below 32 degrees F ,but off at nite above that since we have insulation. Pellets should be hopefully around 5 bucks or so for 40 pound bag. Less is better if quality is there.
