So...I get into the truck each day and drive down the road. Since I knew I was going to have a stove installed I have been scrounging like no tomorrow. Craigslist...local papers...drives just to look for wood on the side of the road were a common practice. When my wife and I went out I am like a radar detector but not for cops..wood. She would say to me, "Don't you ever stop?" and my reply was..."NO, we get our heating fuel for free practically." You are out of your mind on a good day prior to the stove my wife would say. No matter how far I am from home my eagle eye is always looking for a good scrounge. Not that I am going to drive 100 miles to scrounge, but I still look. Yesterday I was out with my wife and she said to me...get this....I noticed some wood near daycare on the side of the road. Huh...I shook my head....you WHAT! Darn it...I have creaed a scrounge spotter. Nice...! She also mentioned that the local lumber yard had left some pallets on the road. Before she could ask me what time should I expect you back I was out the door. Needless to say I picked up the wood...small stuff..green oak :) and the pallets (7). Thinking as I was driving home with a smile...I just might just might give more that the stove some wood tonight...LOL. Atta-girl I said when I arrived home.

You have to love it.......chalk one up for the obsessed folks who scrounge.

You trained her well.... ;-)

Got my gf a pair of pink big carharts and coat to match...lol but she can run the splitter and stack wood....Funny to watch that pink outfit's running around a splitter and tractor! She gives'em Hell. Oh and the best looking carharts I have ever seen!

Not only does Mrs woodchip collect wood, she has been known to saw some too.

One day I might let here loose with the axe, although I'm not sure I trust her that much ;-)

+1 mine has decide the 192t has its limits lol(for limbing only but didn't have to tell her that) Now she thinks shes ready for the 460 after running the 880 mill on a long run. Love the attitude!

It makes sense. Two people can see more than one!

I think I will just be happy with the eyes out for wood. Giving her a splitter/axe/chainsaw would sign her up for the amputee plan at the local hospital. I think my next step is to get her to identify wood. This way she can apply the splits and they will not go up like match sticks. (pine)

Guys....don't piss off your girl if she is wheeling a axe/hatchet. As my wife says....wood is wood.....this is why I keep the sharp tools to myself. ;)

Just kidding..rock on! Sounds like you have some good woman.

Good for her, Mike821. A wife's work is never done.

Dear husband would rather me not use his splitter or saw....just yet anyway BUT I can handle the maul and wedges. Went walking earlier in the week and spotted two beech down due to a recent storm. Suspect I know what we'll be doing this weekend....if it stops snowing.

Dont let him kid you a maul and wedges is much tougher than a saw.... (safety police will be out soon) lol

Congrats! We've been using our fireplace since we moved into our house a year and a half ago. But since I put an insert in last week and the house as been warm for us (and the furnace has been off) my wife has went from "you're spending too much time gathering wood" and "obsessed with this and that..." etc. to actually searching craigslist for free wood!

We're actually both going to pick up some free wood tonight...together! This is huge so I know where you're coming from.

my wife has got the scrounging radar sickness too. She's got a good eye for it.

It'll make you crazy at times and I used to be afraid - I couldnt' turn it off, but once my stacks are done March 1st, I turn it off and say goodbye to Hearth.com until October - and my mind switches channels to fishing.

There's not enough room in my brain to accomodate more than one obsession at a time! Wood only during the months I can't fish. It's a life saver.

Right on!!!! Nothing beats free heat...well a little gas and some exercise.

Last month the heating bill was $27 down from $300-350. My wife said they must have made a mistake. I walked away and said nothing. As I was just about to walk away she says....you were right. This will save us money. I grinned and said, "I told ya so" and it is great exercise splitting. two weeks before the installation of my stove I started gathering wood. To date I have brought home seven cords, cut, split, and stacked. I have lost 20lbs since I am the splitter and down a pant size. I also have learned that if my wife now does not get mad at me with my, "obsession" with wood. She knows it will all come to a head as we don't have much space left for more wood. Talk about being pissed off......what am I going to do when I have reached my limit of wood?

I guess it is back to a few PBR's and enjoy the heat.

Mike - don't get too excited about the money you are saving.

She's probably got that spent. You see women are smarter. She's not gonna give you grief now that she's realized the money is being saved and she can spend it elsewhere!

Don't worry about it - just go chop some more wood and you'll get over it.

LOL...if she is getting wood...they better be paying the bills. If not #6 high brass leaves a real nasty rash.
I knew this posting this would spur one of the croud to comment on the wife and wood. It's all good.

Hey, I'm making progress too. Last year it was all about dust, wood piles, crazy wood forum. This winter (especially after seeing oil bill) she's been keeping the fire going all day while I'm at work. Maybe next year.....

free wood. all good. some places (alaska, black hills, colorado, california) can get gold if you go scrounging. last winter, i had all free heat and hot water (7 months). i guess that's better than finding a few hundred $ of gold, huh?
unrelated, but my sister-in-law always asks my brother (when they go somewhere) "dear, do you think we'll be passing any antique shops today?" to which he issues he standard reply "yep...all of them!"

Yooperdave....right on! Free wood is all good! Can you imagine the look you would get if you said, "Honey...are we going to pass any nice trees today I can buck? I will even settle for a pile of pre-cuts the local department of public works left for the taking." The face would be priceless!!!!!

Yooper....I forgot to mentioin that I miss the trips to the UP. I lived in Ypsilanti for 2.5 years and would head up to the UP to a cabbin my buddy had (location I forget...). He lived in Bad AX.....Loved that town name. Ahh the good ole' days driving across to CA (Winsor) to the great bars in CA. The bars were always too hot and the girls shed their cloths.... :) CA brought new meaning to GO-GO.
